BEAR YOUTH DIRÉCTORS OF
DISTRÍCT III
Halloween, October 31st, is soon ap-
proaching. We find it such a grand tirne
to pian a party for the youth and
hope your lodge will pian sométhing for
this occasion. There are so many games
that are fun for the young, and the
adults tco. Décoratioňs are inexpensive
and with a little thought and planning
Haloween pafties can be so much fun.
We want to urge each Lodge in Dis-
trict III to select a youth leader. We
hope the lodge ořficers will work with
the youth leaders and encourage therr*
in tlieir work in planning progranis that
would be of interest to the youth.
We will cppreciate having the names

About Our Health
AUSTIN — Those twin menaces —
cancer and heart disease — hung up a
grim new record for the number of
Texans killeď last year, a finál tabula-
tion of death statisties shows.
Of a grand total of 69,671 deaths froni
all causes during 1958, almost half were
dne either to heart disease or to cancer.
Heart disease killed 22, 888 while cancer
elaimed 10, 168.
While the number of cancer deaths
has inereased perceptably in the past
three years, the inerease has little sig-
nificanee. The rate of deaths from can-
cer in Texas is sfcill well belcw the rate
for the United States as a whole. This
statě registered 112 deaths from^cancer
fer each 100,000 population, wnile the
rate for the rfest of the nation was 146
deaths per 100,000 population.
The tíisparity between the Texas and
U.S. cancer death rate is probably due
to the fact that Texas has a younger
population. Cancer is a; disease that
■usuallý strikes people past 50 years of
ago. Of the 10,000 cancer deaths last
year, 82.13 of them were *among per-
sons past the half-century mark. ,

He as the leader and 14 teenagers
came to the meeting of Lodge No. 84
and asked to start a Teenage Club. Per-
mission was granted by the Mother Lod-

first meeting September 23, 1956. James
was elected First President—What do
you think of that?
He has been appointed chairman of
the Šummer trip Committe-e and Chair-
man of the Queen Contest.

Remember our Rest Home

Most of the inerease is in the age
group 55 and over. And therein lies the
irony: normál life spán has; been
Lengthened to an age when heart di-
sease has a field day.
The same reason — longer life spans
— is obviously behind the remarkable
gain in the United States death rate
from heart afflietions. 15,000 more
Amerieans died of heart disease last
year than died in 1955.
As life expectaney continues to in-
erease, more and more people are going
to fall victims to heart disease. And al-
though this fate cannot be avoidied, it
can be delayed. Hexe is a simple four-
point regimen for staving it off as long
as possible,
1. Reduce the tension of “modem
Jiving,” and. get moderate exercise. A
non-strenious hobby is beneficial.
2. EÍiminate exce.ssive weight
taxes you heart. Do not overeat.
that
3. If you smoke, eut your consump-
fcíon of cigarettes to le&s than a paek
daily. Smoking constricts the flow of
blood and places an extra load on the
heart.
4. Above all, see your íamily physi-
cian at least once annually for a thoro-
ugh physical examination.
