The gardens in West are really smil-
ing ii,ow aťter those rains. The little
vegetable seedlings are really shooting
up. Your editor sure is goirig to eat
a lot oí Swiss Chard this winter for every
seed seems to háve come through! The
whjite sweet Alyssum in my garden
has surely perked up and doing me
pjfóiid. Even the deep purple petunias
which I pruned rather severely from
their rambling statě this summer are
flowering again.
It is hard to resist ordering everything
in those beautiful color catalogues and
one can easily fall into a statě of hav-
ing too many beds and plants to care
fóre when weeding time comes around.
It is a temptation I haveto fight all the
time for after all, my garden plays sec-
ond fiddle to the Vestnik sometimes and
tiie work connected with our lodge meet-
ings when necessary.
.The last issue of the Vestnik listed
several lodges giving Hallowe’en Parties
for their Youths. Hallowe’en has al-
ways .meant good time for youngsters in
America, How we ušed to prepare for it.
We, would cut out black cats, witches on
brooms, qack-o-lantems from oránge
páper in school and talce tliem home to
use on our Hallowe’en costumes. Our
parties that our mothers gave for the
neighborhood youngsters would include
candies apples, popcorn and the teen-
punch of fruit juice became “Witches
Biew’ on this occasion. We would then
go in groups through the night around
our neighborhood; blowing horns and
rattling rattles, only the older boys who
we.re bored with such “kid stuff” would
look for more excitment than the cos-
túmes and rnasks and bedlam. They lift-
écť gates fromi their hinges on fenees to
put them up in a tree with Fido’s house,
or haul some heavy outhouse out into
the street to a cross road. Outside of
mqVing things about, there was no de-
štní ction. Of course even then the irate
můn of the house ušed to fume at hav-
ing to get things out of trees and plače
them back where they belonged.
Today we grandparents look forward
to Halloween only to see the little
“spooks” timidly knoek at our cloor and
yell “triek or treať when we openthem.
Of course, they all tromp inside in their
Ballowe’en regalia and help themselves
to some offer candy or cookies and
with a polité “Thank You” tromp back
out to some adult lurking out of sight.
We think of our own grandehildren and
hope that too are getting a “bang” out
of this night of nights when all of
spookcloní is turned loose.
I hope you girls are all reading the
travelogues in the Vestnik written by
our two Sisters, Mrs. Betty Juřica and
Miss Naomi Kos tom. If you are, you can

now see that the Texas Delegation part-
ecl in Cžechoslbvakia to také two sep-
arate tours. Both of these ladies are
doing a wonderful job of writing their
impressions and experiences. Both of
these ladies are born in America, I be-
lieve, and that makes the writing all
the more interesting. We would like to
pouse here and now to apologize to
Sister Betty Juřica for obmitting one
seriál of her fcrip. Inadvertently her ser-
ies had already been set up to run and
somehow got taken out in reshuffling
the space and was completely left out.
We are sorry, Betty.
Dear Rose Helweg, it was so nice hear-
ing from you again, and thanks for the
tickets on that quilt. It would be most
appreeiatecl if I did win it. I hope your
health continues to improve and IT1 re-
member you in my prayers to that ef-
fect. Bless you!
We háve another charming sister who
writes a very interesting letter from
whom we háve not heard in a long time,
out Seymour way, the very nice Mrs.
Ed, Haisler. fíhe^ the Youth Director
for that Distrlct and I believe she teach-
es school, too, as does our Sister Clara
Hejl in District II. Nonetheless, she
writes such nice letters and our SPJST
family would like hearing from that
section of Texas again. —- They really
had a nice District Ivleeting in Seymour
when it was my privilege to meet sister
Haisler. Brother Fred Kveton is their
District 4 Organizer. Brother Kvetou —
the harvest is all in now, how about let-
ting us hear from you, if yoiťre still
among the living!
We thought of our home Lodge 92 in
Fort Worth, last Sunday while cover-
ing the District II Meeting in Holland.
This Lodge 92 was having initiation of
new merr.bersand a Bazaar which we
would háve liked to attended. Lodge 92
always has such nice meetings, iťs a
pleasure to go to them. I’m delightel
that the Youth Club is being orgaiiized
for they háve so many tallented young-
sters who do so wonderfully under the
guidance of Sister Flora Koci (another
school teacher) and her capable assist-
ants. There is a large membership of
youngsters in Lodge 92 and when they
get organized they can set the páce to
the Dallas Lodge 84 group. Our sincerest
best wish.es to your succe&s Lodge 92.
The flu has finally infiltrated our
schools and many towns háve had to
closé down their schools complefely un-
til the epidemie subsides. With our pres-
ent day wonder drugs available, our doc-
tors are able to keep the sufferer safe
from the danger of death as was the
čase when the flu struck this country
after World War I. when deaths from it
were coímnon.
Wechi/ísday, October 30 19BT
I hope that you Texas girls arerťt
stricken with this flu, and that those
of you who may háve it, see a doctor im-
mediately so that your chances for a
quick recovery are assured.
My best wishevS to you for a nice week-
end, I am

NEEDVELLE, TEXAS, LODGE 82
Dear Sisters and Brothers:
For a number of years in the past,
our Lodge Needville No. 81 has always
had a sociál get together and election of
officers of the lodge in our November
meeting.
This year again we are planning to
háve the same.
Our sisters are kindly asked to briňg
the eats, and the brothers will see to it
that we háve sometliing with which to
wash it down.
It is very important and urgent that
as many of you come to this meeting
as possible, and in the meantime be
thinking of who you would elect as
your president, because I want to step
out now and let someone younger také
over.
Of course, I am speaking for myself
only when I say that after the age of
60 a person does not háve much business
running the affairs of so many younger
members.
During thé time that I was a mem-
ber of the go*od old 3PJST I háve served
at least 35 years in some lodge Office,
so I think it is time for me to háve some
rest. I believe it would look reál nice
to see some young faces at the “steer-
ing wheel” of our Lodge.
