1956. Here in smáli print we would like
to tliank Carlyn for her efforts in all
these steak dinners too. Her part is no
smáli one as there are those little pre-
parations that go with giving a dinner.
After the presentation of awards, a

WH AT OUR TEENAGERS HÁVE TO
SAY:—
Many of the most devoted and. “en-
lightened” parents make the least ef-
fective ones. That, at least, is what
meinbers of a House education subcom-
mittee must be turning over in their
minds after listening to some touring
teen-agers whom. htey asked on the
spur of the moment of give theni ad-
vice on juvenile delinquency.
These youngsters certainly punctured
some myths cherished by a lot of dot-
ing rnoms and dads. But the acting
head of the United States Childrenfi
Bureau, who was present says: These
youngsters are making the same points
we háve arrived at after years of study
—only better. *
Youngsters don’t rebel at disciplině;
they do rebel 'at inconsistency—overle-
niency now, strictness then. Many par-
ents either do everything to keep their
children occupied and then suddenly
turn them loose on their own as teen-
agers, oř they encourage smáli children
to “let. off steani” but are shocked wheii
as teen-agers they do this after sittirig
daily for hou.rs in school. *
Other parents háve provided “ready-
made” occupations for their children so
eompletely that as teen-agers, with no
practice in thihklng up things for them-
selves, they just hang around drug
stores or go riding. Children crave time
to ju,st sít and read, listen ťb music.
An exchangě pupil fromi Germany
threw in what wili be a bombshell for
many people: American youngsters
seern afraid to be themselves—.indepen-
dent, individual. And an American girl
backedi this up from another angle:
Youngsters Want guidance—guidance to
lielp them stand up against sociál pres-
sures which say you must, do as others
do, good or bad.
These two groups of teen-agers, in
all probability, wouldiVt and eouldiri
háve told their parents what they told
the congressmen. That committee room
must háve become a catalyst which cry-
stallizcd what they had thought only
vaguely before or talked over solely
among themselves. Nor are these young-
sters yet ready to be better parents
than their own. But they are “consunv
ers” of parental direction. Business is
always telímg itself: Ask the consumer,
Well, these, “consuniers” háve told the
parents.
