PART HL
(Continuéd)
After two fuli weeks in Prague and
other interesting spots in Czechoslova-
kia we were now ready to leave for
Vienna, Austria. Reluctantly we took
leave of new acquaintances and friend-
ly, fcllowpassengers that still remain-
ed at the hotel.
Having passed through the friendly
and cooperative customs at the Prague
Airport, we boarded the plane for Vien-
na.
On arrival in Vienna the difference
in generál conditions amazed us. Like
any large city in the U. S. it is active
1 and industrious. More automobiles are
found here than in Czeclioslovakia and
transportation of eyery ďeseription is
available; this includes the practical bi-
cycle.
The historical background of Austria
is likewise tremendously rieh The
palace of the latě Kaiser, Franz Joseph
and the royal famiy is one of the most
interesting attractions. While the gar-
dens are kept up <very well a large part
of the mansion is dosed. The splendor
of the interior cannot be entered into
completeíy beeause my attem.pt is in-
adequate, but the iurnishings are said
to be those left by the royal family, and
remain unused. You easily experience
a sinking feeling to view all this splen-
dor realizing that the glory and pomp
which once filled the .atmospherc is now,
apparently, gone forever. But it takés
people who lived in Vienna during the
reign of the latě Franz Joseph to ap~
preeiate the history which is handed
down to us; when it took only the de-
parture of a member of the royal family
from. the palace gates to fill the air
with music, to view the palace guards
on parade or to escort a royal subject
to his destination only to be aceompa-
niecl by the military band with music
that to this day has not lost its eharm.
Our tours were made with the assis-
tance of a guide who took us through
the Vienna Woods via Perchtoldsdorf to
the Liechtenstein Castle where in year
1132 niné Hussars defended Napoleon
and lost their lives. For years this castle
rcmained unoccupied, standing only to
the memory of these martyrs and he-
roé& But, at present, it is a plače of re-
fuge for escaped Hungarians.
Not too far from this spot is the sum-
mer home of Franz Schubert where he
cbmposed his fmmortal Linden Tree
and other favorite compositions.
Further down the road we entered the
gates of the Heiligenkreuz Monastery.
A íuneral was being conducted for a

police officer. It was cold and wet as we
stood out while the procession filed
through the court yard. This was an un-
usual scene in tliat the mourners and
brothers officers walked the entire, dis-
tance to the burial grounds.
In the car again, the guide drove us
to Mayerling, the Hunting Lodge of
Crown Prince Rudolph, the heir to the
Austrian throne. However, as you know,
he met his tragic death on this spot in
1889. Built on the lineš of a castle it is
now being occupied by sixteen Sisters
of the Catholic Carmelíte Order. These
Sisters seem. to do all the manual work
and labor necessary in the operations
of the estate.
We continuéd through the forest
which is much like sections of our statě
of Colorado and parts of New Mexico —
on to the Springs of Ba den. This is
an attractive town with nice wide
streets and impressive homes — or at
least they were before the Russian oc-
cupation which ended in 1955. When the
city was taken the families were forced
to evacuate, and their property and be-
longings were confiscated or destroyed.
When Austria became free again the
Russians had; to return to their country,
but in their wake, they left only des-
tru ction. Not one windowpane or fixture
was left undamaged. In the past two
years remarkable progress has been
made in restoring the Sulphur Springs
of Baclen.
Most of the following day was devo-
ted to sightseeing through the city of
Vienna. It would háve taken weeks to
háve been able to go through the fa-
mous buildings such as the library, the
museum, churches and government
buildings. Like the Orloj (the astronomi-
cal clock) in Prague, Vienna also has
a clock of rare workmanship. While the
clock on Staro Mestke Namesti in Pra-
gue is an attractin becau.se of the par-
ade of the statues of the twelve apos-
tles of the Lord as they appear over
the frame work of the clock on the
hour, the clock in Vienna is famous for
the inspiring music that is heárď while
several famous composers make their
appearances in the same way as the sta-
tues of the Orloj. In both instances, we
noticed that a crowd -always gathered
before the clock struck the hour. These
rare masterpieces never cease to be fas-
cinating.
That same evening we attended an
excellent performance of Puccinťs Ma?
non Lousant at the State Opera House.
This opera house was bombed during

the last war, however, it: has sine# been
restored and completed in Noverabe?
1955; not to its originál ordeř and style,
however, the beauty oř the exterior was
not destroyed.
llie days went by and this party of
four Texans (one slightly ihclined to-
ward the statě of C&Ufornia) took their
leave of the Bristol Hotel where the
personnel and accommodations were not
to be equalled until wě reached Lucerně,
Switzerland; we rode down the román-
tic and picturesque Ring Stra&se with
its charming par ks and widé sidewaiks,
its shops and sidewálks caíes — , in
short, the beautiful city of Vienna, the
city of dreams, though it canf never
compare with the city it was bofOre the
last war.
