often maniřests Use li by what is called,
in modem American idiom, .“wise-
cracks” oř smart remarks,’
Becau.se of this, cleverness is often
'given an unfavorable connotation. As
Ruclyarcl Kipíing once asked: ‘Tťs
elev.er, but is it art?” Also. anoth$r
Engiish writer years. ago counseled
young ladies: “Be a good, sweet -maid,
and let who will bc clover.” Tlius it has
also been observed that Ume and again
a “clevér mist of worets” sořves td midte
the lack of knowledge on the part of
a speaker or writer,
Jeulousy is the mark of the poor
loser: It is the defense naechanism we
hide behind to avoici facing up to the
iact that we háve lo.st. Jealousy is, es-,
sentially tliwarted pride. Nevěr be
jealous of a person who moves ahead.
He or sile had what it takés. They
generally deserve it, and probably háve
sacrificed a great dea! to accompiish
a step íorward. Remember —for every
step up, you must .glve up somethmg..
Cliinb slowly and surely with grim de-
termination and success will be yours.

Aprií FooFs ov All-Fooťs Bav is the
nanic given to the first Apríl in aliu-
sion to the custom of playing practieal
jokes on friends -that day; or sending
them on fooťs errancls.
The origin of thé practieal joke
custom has been much clispiited,. It is
in some way a relic of those once uni-
vérsai ffestivities held at the vernai
equiríox, which, beginning on old New
Year’s Day, March 25, ended Apríl t.
In India, at the feast of Hnil, -the
last day which is March 31, the ehief
amusement is the befooling of people
by sending them on- fmitless, foolish
errands.
The maki.ng of Apríl fools in Great
Britain was a cotnmon custom along
about the start of .the 18th eentury. In
Scotland the custom was known as
“hunting the gowk,” the cuckoo,. and
April fools were “April-gowks,” the
cuckoo being there, as it is in most
lan cis, a-term. of con templ. In France,
the person befooletl is known as “pois-
son cťavril,” (April fish).
