stock and háve breakfast, This proved
an unwise rnove.
They ihad gone perhaps ten miles
íurther when they spotted the Mexi-
čana in the rear, The Texans now
It alt o cl and fired upon the approach-
:ing enemy, but preceiving that they
were too far off, took up their march
'again. They had gone a mile, when in
Crossing a depression the ammunition
wagon bre.ke down. They were sudden-
ly cut off from a wooded area, about a
mile distant, which they were trying
to reach, and were soon surroimded by
the enemy.
At first the Texans fought valiantly
and hekl the Mexicans at bay. But the
morning of the 20ťh, Urrera received
reinforeements of cavalry and artil-
lery and Fannin immediately recogniz-
,ed tlhe hopelessness of the situation.
They were ouínumbered three to one
and further resistance could only
:mean complete annihilatio-n. He de-
eided to také a chance on ccnditional
surrender.
Santa Anna had issued orders that
all men caught bearing arms against
Mexico would be treated as traitors;
there woiild be no exceptions. The
iprisoners were returned to Goliad,
and on the morning of the 24th, were
marched out onto the plains east of
Goliad and shot.
To say that Fannin was an incom-
petent leader would hardly be justifi-
able. That he often found himself in
extremely embarrassing and higihly
difficult situations might be blamed
cm his location of command. That he
was plagued by a laick of inertia, how-
ever, is evident, and in this one pas-
sive characterisiic ean be found the
cause.of his fate.

Dear Brothers, Sisters and Friends:
Just a few lineš to inform all the
members, especially the smáli fry, that
our annuai Easter party and egg hunt
will be held Apríl 21st, the Sunday aft-
er Easter Sunday. It will be held at
the Banquet Creek Park, about two
miles west of Banquet, off Highway 44.
It is a very nice plače, and Commis-
sioner Sablatura certainly, deserves
praise for the way he fíxed the park
up. It ušed to be a dumping ground,
but with some cleaning and fixing up
it is re.ally a pleasant plače to háve a
plenic.
So you members load up the kids and

yburilelves, grab • a few sandwiches,
kolaches or whatever is handy, and
come out to the park. The loclge will
furnish the drinks and you that háve
children bring a few eolored Easter
eggs for the hunt.
The weather here is hot and dry,
and we are slowly but surely drying

and most of them come up, but Nueces
County did not get any rain. it cer-
s tainly was hot here Tuesday; the ther-
mometer hit 110 degrees. Today,
Thursday, it is clcudy and we are be-
gínriing to trope again that it might
rain.
Doiťt forget the 21st; see you all at
the park.

Dear Sisters and Brothers:
The Youth Club had their Easter
Program before our meeting. I will
not give you all the details of the
program as I am sure the Youth Club
reportér will write about it, but I do
want to say that everyone wího had a
part in the program did so well. They
ended the program with the “Easter
Parade.” Catherine Holý and Johnny
Kaluza played the “Grand March” on
their aebordions, which rnade a nice
ending for the program. May I add
that Bro, Nick. Morris was kept busy
taking various pictures of the pro-
gram and I am sure some of these
pictures will be seen in a later issue
of the Vestnik.
After the program Bro. Mikeska
called our meeting to order. The Pledge
of Allegiance was led by three Youth
Club girls.
Bro . Cocek re ad the minutes of our
previous meeting and it was approved
as read. The Treasurer and Financial
reports were read.
Bró. Mikeska mentioned that Sister
Estelle Marek had broken her ankle
and was in the hospital for several
days, but we all were glad to see her
at the meeting even though she had
to hop along on crutches, Here’s wish-
ing you a speedy recovery and nope
you will soon lay those crutches aside.
Next Bro. Červenka took over and
made a brief talk in Czech in regards
to tihe members who are SPJST mem-
bers for 50 years. Sister Frankie Mi-
Wednesday, Apríl 1?, 1903
keska and Sister Helen Cepak had the
honor to pln the 50-year emblems on
Brother Joe R. Mazanec and Brother
Frank Volcik. Their wives were seated
with them in the front row.
Lodgre 54, West — 50-year pin awards
were presented to Brothers Frank
Volcik, left, and Jos. Mazanec.
Bro. Mikeska recognized Bro. Ed and
Sister Agnes Mazanec of Waco, who are
members of Lodge 66. Bro. Mazanec
also made a very nice shořt talk, which
I am sure everyone enjoyed. He said
he especially wanted to see his brother
Joe receive his 50-year pin. Others
recognized were Bro. Vick Halí Who ai-
so: was asked to say a few words, and
Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Kocurek who are
the parents of our Princess Bernadette
Kocurek.
Bro. Kacir mentioned that we should
also reco.gnize two of our members who
wcn in elections Saturday. They are
Bro. Emil Popp of Abbott, as City Com-
missioner, and Bro. Edmund Marek of
Penelope, as school trustee. Congratu-
lations to both oí them!
Sister Frankie Mikeska, Youth Lead-
cr, introduced the Princess Berná-
tíette Kocurek and her escort Jimmy
Nemec, and Duchess Shirlcy Nemec
and her escort Billy Way ne Král. They
will represent our Lodge.
No other business was brought up,
so the meeting was adjourned. Lunch
wás tlien served, eonsisting of sand-
wiches, various pastries, potato chips,
and cořfee.
May l aaa, before closing this letter,
that it was nice seeing Bro. and Sister
IMazanec at the meeting. Try to come
to our mcetings again.
Our next meeting will be on May
5th.
