VĚSTNÍK
In the liealthy adult non-hospital
•population, only 7.6 per cent of the
subjeets were “positive.”
Interesťingly, the incidence of posi-
tive reactors to the test was almost
twice as íhigh among cigarett© smokers
than non-smokers Dr. Carpenter told
the American Cancer Society’s seminář
for science writers at La Jolla Beach
and Tennis; Club that this coulcl not
as yet be expíained.
The sérum, tests actually “caught”
signs of inflammatory disease, but tur-
ther clinical evaluation was then re-
quired to detennine if the subject had
cancer oř a non-cancerous conclition.
If the testing were being cloně as a
public health measure r a ther than for
expermiental purposes, Dr. Carpenter
pointed out that scientists could aim
their efforts at the “positive” reactors
in the population.
Cancer wíhich has invaded tissue can
be determined by the tests in 8 out of
10 patients and 9 of 10 patients with
brochogenic carcinoma (lung cancer)
react positively, said Dr. Carpenter.
Although the tests lack sensitivity,
Dr. Carpenter points out that other
diagnostik measures now in use do,
too.
“The best clinical examination of
the non-hospital population detects 7
cancer patients per 1,000, but fails to
diagnose an equal number with the
disease,” Dr. Carpenter says.
“Also of interest, are the standard
Sieroilogic tesíts ušed exdensively for
syphilis. In patients with laterit syph-
ilis, approximately 50 per cent yield
biologie falše positive tests, yet such
tests are accepted laboratory pro-
cedures,” he addecl.
