MAY 30 — MEMORIÁL DAY
May 30th is Memoriál Day, first oí~
ficially observed in honor of the na-
tions war dead at Washington, D.C.,
95 years ago — in 1868. Memoriál Day,
or Decoration Day, began during the
Civil War when Southern women in
Vicksburg and Columbus, Mississippi,
and Charleston, South Carolina, dec-
orated Union as well as Confederate
graves. When Mayor John A. Logan
became commander of the postwar
Grand Anny of the Republic, he issued
on May 5, 1868, his famous order “That
every post of the Grand Anny should
hold suitable exercises and decorate
the graves of their dead comradcs
with flowers — Let no ravages of time
testify to coming generations that we
háve forgotten as a people the cost of
a free and undivided Republic.” May
30th, a time when flowers are at their
best, was chosen as the dáte, and tlie
first Memoriál observance was heid
in Washington. Ambulances carried
flowers to Arlington Cemctery from
the Botanic Garden, the Treasury
grounds, and the Presidenťs conserva-
tory and private gardens. General
Ulysses S. Grant, presidential nominee,
v/as in the stands, and General James
A. Garfield, then in Congress but láteř
to become President, gave the oration.
Each year, on Memoriál Day, the
American people grace the graves of
their fallen heroes, in tribute to the
thousands of these heroes, and in
their hearts, recall the young man or
young woman who lay down his life in
a faraway land, in defense of his
Homeland.
American mothers especially. ap-
proacli this day with heavy hearts, but
with a proud heart to go to the graves
and lay flowers or wreaths on their
fallen sons. If this is not possible, then
they pay tribute with memories and
prayc.rs, going back, in a fleeting mo-
ment, to the finál resting plače of
their loved o ne.
If. is fitting and proper that this day
in May be set aside to pay homage
and respect to our fallen dead -— to
(hoše who gave the last measure of
devotion in order to prese rve this
free land of ours. Thank God for it!
These honored dead deserve our třib-
utes and respect, and our gratitude.
We must never forget them!
The observation has been made be-
fore in this column that the current
conflict in Viet Nam is getting closser
to all of us. Our SPJST has been
touched directly with the deaths of
four oí our young members so far. The
