A TRIBUTE TO SPJST MEMBER
A liighly complimentary article ap~
peared rccently ín the Dallas Morning
News about one of our SPJST members
living in Dallas. He is Brother Henry
P. Kučera, city attorney of Dallas, who
has served under twelve Dallas mayors.
Áll of the eight living mayors of the
city of Dallas arranged a luncheon to
pay tribute to Brother Kučera for out-
standing public Service to the people of
Dallas over twenty-eight years.
The clipping was sent by Bister Karla
Kraft, a member of Jaro Lodge No. 130.
It reads as follows:
City jLeaders Pay Tribute to Kučera
Dallas business and civic leaders, at a
City Club luncheon Thursday, paid
tribute to Dallas' lor.g-time City At-
torney, Henry P. Kučera, for outstand-
ing public service to the City of Dallas,
and its people.
Mayor R. L. Thornton Sr. and seven
former mayors of Dallas—W. M. Hol-
land, George Sergeant, George A.
Sprague, Woodall Rodgers, James R.
Temple, Wallace H. Savage and J. B.
Adoue Jr.—were there to speak of Ku-
čera^ devotion to his job and Dallas.
Kučera, who joined the city’s legal
staff in 1925 and became city attorney
in 1935, has served under all of them
except Holland, who was before his
time. Altogether, Kučera has served un-
der twelve mayors.
Rodgers described the occasion as
“unique because never háve so many
come to praise a man still in Office, and
a man who is an employee of the city
rather tlian an elected official.”
Mayor Thornton said that “we come
to pay tribute to a friend who has i
brought honor to himself and to his
city. That kind of achievement can
come only to a man who renders un-,
scifish service to the people and to a
city he loves. Be is reccgnized as one
of the greatest municipal lawyers of the
country.”
Sergeant recalled that his adminis-
tration appointed Kučera as city attor-
ney “although he did not support our
ticket. But there was no better man,
so we put him ín.”
Temple lauded Kucera’s fínancíal acu-
men. “He was the one who straightened
us out when we thought we were on the
right track, but were not. He has doně
a lot to savé dollars and cents for Dal-
las.”
Rodgers added that “Kučera has
thrown more monkey wrenches into the
plans of city council in order to savé
money Tor the people than any man.”
Rodgers, saying that “he is America
itself,” told. of Kucera’s background as
a son of Czechoslovakian immigrants
“who came up the hard way.”
Adoue said that “anyone in the city
government who has gone against his
advice has found it was bad judgment.”
In behalf of the City Club, Rodgers
presented Kučera with a gold wrist
watch. Then Kučera, choked with eroo-
tion, stood for a minuté or two before
the 100 or more business leaders before
he could speak.
“Lots of times I liave had to pioneer
in municipal law,” Kučera said. “But
one thing I háve kept in mind: If it is
just, if it is fair, if it is honest, and if
it is moral, then it is pretty near to be-
ing legal. That has been my guiding
principle in conduct of the city’s busi-
ness.”

SPJST delegates were in Boston, they
had doně some boosting. But the bar-
becue for the delegates in Dallas turned
the triek. We are recognized, we are
known. It is up to us to utiiize this
publicity.
THIS COMING SUNDAY, ŠEPTEM-
ber 27, there will be a meeting of the
organizers in Temple. As’ it was explained
to me by Brother Marek, it was orig-
ínally planned that the meeting wculd
be for the organizers in District Two.
But there are too many ofcher acfcivities,
far too • many needs for our ^upřeme
officers to be at other places, $nat it :.s
impossible for them to bald organiza-
