the Waco area, When the reports háve
been of suffíeient statewide news in-
terest, as in the seiection of ‘‘Miss
SPJST of the 1984 Convention”, the
local representatives of the Associated
Press and United Press International
news and photo wire Services háve
transmitted these news stories and pie-
tures throughout the statě. Ifc is ex-
pected that we will utilize this means
oř transmitting the inforniation about
the election of officers on this, the
closing day of the conventíon,
The reception of the news media to-
ward our public relations efforts has
been most favorable and ge.nera.llyj
much better t-han was expected. This
we assume is dne at least in part to
the preconvention mailing of appropri-
ate information to acquaint the news
media wit-h the meaning, history, pur-
poses, membership, Services, and acti-
vities of the SPJST. A copy of this pre-
convention mailing is atiaehed. to and
is a part of this report.
We are most grateful to the Supreme
Loclge President, Brother Edward L.
Marek, for his appointment of a pre-
convenltion public relations director
and to the Conventíon Chairman, Biu
Paul Sablatura, for his appointment of
this speciál conventíon committee. The
committee also acknowledges the full
cooperation and support of all the Su-
preme Lodge Officers and all the con-
vention officers and delegates in the
performance of its task.
It has been gratifying to the mem-
bers of this committee to learn of the
publication of SPJST Conventíon news
in many of both the smáli and the
leading newspapers of Texas and to
hear of its use on rádio and tele vision.
In order that we may háve a se rap -
book to show properiy the extent of
our publicity, we earnestly request that
you send us any such news clippings
from your hometown newspapers
when you return home. Please send the
entire sheet of the newspaper in which
the article appeared, if possible. Also
give us the ca 11 letters of any radlo
stations and television stations which
may háve carried any news of our
clon ven ti on.
Although the Work of our commit-
tee has- been somewhat arduous in
nátuře, we háve been encouraged. gra-
tified, impressed, and adequately re-
warded. bv the reception and endorse-
ment that you, our brother and sister
delegates, háve given our work.
The exac-t value of this work. of our
committee in tonus of increased ac-
quaintance with and good will toward
VĚSTNÍK
the SPJST will never be known. Like-
wise, the return on the investment can
never be calculaied. However, it is
hoped. that our organizers will capi-
taiize on any advantageous effect of
this publicity. Likewise, we hope that
our delegates, upo-n their return home,
will také the opportunity created by
this publicity to answer the many
questions and telí their friends and
acquaintances even more about our
řraternal order and our conventíon.
Believing that any really effective
public relations program m-ust be of
a long-range nátuře and must be weli
planned and conducted as a contin-
uous program, we sincerely recommend
that our Supreme Lodge President and
Vice-President, by the power vested in
them by our Constitution and By-Laws,
pian and conduct a suitable active pub-
lic relations program for the four
years between conventions and accele-
rate that program immecliately before
and during each conventíon,
In addition, we recommend that the,
individual members, local lodge offi-
cers, district officers, and Supreme
Lodge Officers avail themselves of ev-
ery opportunity (!) to participate in,
community activities and Services in
behal-f of the lodge, the district and
the order, (2) to explain the mean-
ing, history, purposes, membership,
Services, and activities of the SPJST,
and (3) to otherwise cooperate in the
promotion of any favorable publicity
or other public relations activity which
will benefit this organization and will
solicit the good will of others.
In closing, we recommend the use of
the generál ancl more all — inclusive
words “Public Relations”, rather than
‘‘Publicity”, to besfc describe these rec-
omended activities.
Respectfully submitted to the 19th
SPJST Conventíon by the Publicity
Committee of that Conventíon.

Officers’ Supplemental reports
Convention Report of President of the
Supreme Lodge
Sister and Brother Delegates of this
XIX. Convention:
This is my preconvention supplemen-
tal report. I am giving this report in
accordance with Article 46-s of our
By-Laws for your consideration
We háve many matters to come be-
fóre us in this convention, so I will
make this report as brief as possible.
I suggest that we plače all matters
that can be attended to by the several
committees into their hands. In so
doing we will savé time and expedite
those matters which will come before
the whole body on the floor.
The major matters that we will háve
to reckon with in this convention are
the return of premiums to lodges, the
youth camp, the Home Office, and the
language preference of this convention.
To the return of premiums I favor a
4 v/c return to the lodges as recommend-
ed by our actuary. This would be a
100% increase. And, at the same time
would allow us to slowly lower the mor-
tality table interest rate of the several
classes that are still carried on the
3y2% accumulative factor down to 3%.
In regard the youth activities I favor
recreational facilities for our youth,
however I am in favor of this being
dono on a leasecl basis for the coming
four years. I favor a committee be ap-
pointed in this convention which would
study and bring to the .XX Convention
their report of the finding and a rec-
ommendadtion as to whut the commit-
tee would favor.
In regard to the Home Office here
in Temple, I am in favor of an Office
building built to meet the requirements
of this Order. I sbalí offer any further
suggestion orally in the convention.
