Fireworks will go
on during July 4th
By AMANDA McHUGH_
Staff writer
As firework stands open for one
of their busiest times of the year, the
drought conditions will dictate
whether residents can include bottle
rockets, Roman candles, mortars
and aerials in their Fourth of July
celebrations.
This year, while Coryell Coun-
ty does have an active bum ban, fire-
works will be permitted in the unin-
corporated areas of the county. On
June 24, a 90-day bum ban was im-
posed due to the drought index. The
ban prohibits most outdoor burning
activities to ensure safety for lives
and property.
A press release from Judge
John Firth stated, “There are no re-
strictions for fireworks, the County
requests safety and caution be used
during the upcoming holiday sea-
son.”
In Bell County, there is not cur-
rently a bum ban in effect. As long
as there is not a bum ban in effect,
fireworks will be permitted in the
unincorporated areas of the county.
In Lampasas County, the bum
ban is still in effect until July 21,
meaning residents cannot use fire-
works. “In the county, you are al-
lowed to pop fireworks unless there
is a bum ban in effect,” said Hope

Copperas Cove EDC
Budget
focus
at EDC
meeting
By MELANIE THOMAS_
Staff writer
The proposed 2013-2014 budget of the
Copperas Cove Economic Development Cor-
poration reflects several new programs and
projects.
Cove EDC board members Thursday
discussed the budget at their regular meeting.
Even with a $10,000 increase in state
sales tax, the projected income is expected to
be $1,703,800, about $27,000 less than last
year’s budget of $1,731,000.
Local sales tax is expected to bring in
$12,000.
Operating expenses are also expected to
be higher at $1,340, 871. Last year's expens-
es totalled $1,217, 372.
Executive Director Polo Enriquez said
the proposed budget reflects a 10 percent in-
crease, or $135,099, over the current year
budget.
Enriquez said the proposed Entrepreneur
Center and the Building Renovations, which
totals $143,700, is the difference between the
two budget years.
The difference in revenue stems from
expected advertising sales from the EDC's
digital sign and other factors.
Enriquez said the EDC expected to re-
ceive $29,000 in sales from the sign during
the last fiscal year budget, but has only re-
ceived close to $11,000 in sales as of May.
With Cinergy Cinema no longer using the
sign, he said $15,000 in sales is more in line
with what they expect and is listed in the
proposed budget as such.
Enriquez said the EDC expects a
$425,000 property transaction for the next
fiscal year, compared to $450,000 last year.
He said the proposed budget may under-
go a few changes after the board reviews it.
