Buddy Bash raises nearly $5,000 for cancer research
Special to The Monitor
ATHENS-The Henderson County chapter of the
American Cancer Society ‘Relay For Life’ chair-
woman received a check for $ 1,689 from the family
of Buddy Hopkins recently. This in addition to an-
other $3,200 raised online as part of the fifth annual
Buddy Bash event June 8 , at Tom Finley Park.
“Every year, the Hopkins family has raised a sig-
nificant amount in memory of their dad, to go toward
cancer research,” Relay for Life chairwoman Trena
Mitchell said. The total amount the bash has raised in
Hopkins’ memory totals $54,962.66, she said.
The bash began after Buddy Hopkins of Buddy’s
Hair Care in Gun Barrel City died from stomach can-
cer in 2007.
In previous years, the event was held at the Cedar
Isle Restaurant, which burned down last year.
The Cancer Society holds the annual Relay For
Life to make it easier for survivors and friends of
cancer victims to come together and fight cancer
through fundraising. For more information about par-
ticipating in the 2014 Relay For Life, call Trena
Mitchell at (903) 676-2078.
