Yorktown High graduation Friday
Commencement exer-
cises for the 2014 Yorktown
High School graduating
class will be held at 8 p.m.
on Friday, June 6, at Wild-
cat Stadium.
Victoria Vanessa Pena is
the Valedictorian of the
2014 Yorktown High
School graduating class.
She is the daughter of Adan
and Annabel Pena.
During her freshmen
year, Victoria was active in
powerlifting, placing 6th at
the State meet. She played
varsity softball and was
named All-District Honor-
able Mention Infielder. Her
sophomore year, Victoria
was a Student Council rep-
resentative and was in-
ducted into NHS. She
received 2nd Team All-Dis-
trict Catcher. She also
played volleyball and was
named 1 st Team All-Dis-
trict. She participated in
UIL Accounting and ad-
vanced to Regional s.
Her junior year, Victoria
was vice president of the
Student Council. She was a
member of NHS. She
played varsity volleyball
and received All-District
honors for Outstanding Set-
ter. She was named to the
Academic All-District vol-
leyball team her sopho-
more, junior and senior
years. She also played var-
sity softball and was named
2nd Team All-District
Catcher. She advanced to
Regionals in UIL Account-
ing.
Her senior year, Victoria
served as president of NHS,
and was vice president of
P&P for Student Council.
She was named varsity vol-

and All-State. She played
varsity softball and was
named 1st Team All-Dis-
trict Infielder. She was
named TGCA Academic
All-State in softball. She
also advanced to State com-

James Semper, Jr.
Following graduation,
Victoria plans to attend col-
lege at Angelo State Uni-
versity to major in nursing.

career, James has been very
active in the Yorktown
Wildcat Band, serving as
drum major and receiving

Nordheim graduates receive scholarships

It was standing room
only at the Nordheim Inde-
pendent School auditorium
with just over 300 in atten-
dance to honor the eight
graduating students of
Nordheim High School on
May 31.
The processional was
played by Ms. Lissa Knetig
with the Pledge of Alle-
giance led by Alyssa Marie
Leister. Frankie Cheyenne
Pendergraft did the invoca-
tion. A hymn, “You Have
Come Down to the
Lakeshore” was sung by
all. NISD superintendent
Kevin Wilson welcomed
family and guests.

the salutatorian’s address
with the message to her

Yorktown Community Hall reno-
vation feast will be held Sunday,
June 8, at Yorktown Community
Hall. Plates of homemade sausage
and BBQ with potato salad, beans,
cole slaw and cake will be served
from 11 a.m until sold out. Adult
plates will cost $10 while children
under 12 will cost $5. All plates to
go will be $10. There will be a raf-
fle, cake walk and live auction be-
ginning at 12:30 p.m. in the
air-conditioned dining hall.
City picking up brush
City of Yorktown is picking up
brush (tree limbs, etc.) from the
storm on May 26 at no cost to city
residents. Residents should place
items at the curb to be picked up by
the city workers. For more infor-
mation, contact City Hall at 564-
2611.
YISD Annual Meeting
Yorktown ISD will hold the an-
nual federal programs meeting at 4
p.m. on Wednesday, June 4 in the
Junior High Library. Federal pro-
gram components, requirements,
and expenditures in connection
with student achievement will be
discussed. The public is invited to
attend.
Subway ribbon cutting
Yorktown Chamber of Com-
merce and Agriculture, Inc. will be
holding a ribbon cutting ceremony
for the new Subway located on
Main Street at 10 a.m. on Friday,
June 6. The public is invited to cel-
ebrate the grand opening of the
newest franchise in Yorktown. The
store is offering a buy a 6” sand-
wich and get a 6” sandwich free
and a free drink. This promotion is

Senior Community Bingo will be
held at 12 noon on June 6 at the
Yorktown Fire Station. All seniors

4-H summer camp
The DeWitt County 4-H and Ex-
tension Service will be hosting a
summer camp during the week of
June 16 -20 at the Friar Ag Center
from 1 to 5 p.m. each day. The
camp will be open to all youth of
DeWitt County but will be limited
to the first 30 youth who register.
The cost for the camp is $40 for the
full week or $10 per each session.
Activities offered include
archery, photography, stained glass,
foods and nutrition, golf and more.
Participants will also make ice
cream in a bag, homemade butter
and more. Call the DeWitt County
Extension Office at 361-275-0816
for the schedule and registration in-
formation.
St. Paul Church Day Camp
St. Paul Lutheran Church Day
Camp for Kindergarten through
Fifth Grade will be held 8:30 a.m. -
3:30 p.m. the week of June 16 - 20.
The Cross Trails Ministry group
will be sharing “The Parables of
Jesus — Say What!” Registration
forms can be picked up at the Edu-
cation Building. Register early.
You must be registered to attend.
Lunch and snacks will be provided.

St. Paul Lutheran Church Vaca-
tion Bible School for 3-5 year olds
