Aim High — Then Deliver
You know the feeling. Every so
often, you run across an item in a book
or magazíne that catches your eye. It
might be a story; it might be an adver-
tisement. ít makes you stop and také
notice and maybe even say out loud,
“Thaťs right!” That happened to me one
evening last week. I was thumbing
through a magazíne when I ran across an
advertisement for Computer software.
The last line of the advertisement
expressed the company’s business phi-
losophy. Four simple words was all it
took: Aim high—then deliver.
The first thing I did was “dog-ear” the
page so I wouldn’t _
forget it. That reál- mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
ly wasirí neces-
sary. The first
thing 1 thought of
when 1 woke ud
the next morning
were the words:
Aim high — then
deliver.
Iťs a simple
philosophy that can
be applied to every
aspect of life.
From establishing
home and family
priorities to devel-
oping meaningful
organizational
goals and objectives.
Aim high — then deliver. You may
already be doing it — and, if so, thaťs
great. For the rest of us, how much more
could we achieve — as individuals, in
our local lodges and in our Society — by
raising our sights on what we hope to
achieve in the new millennium.
Imagine the possibilities. Twenty
years from now — looking back at the
tum of the century — and feeling very
good about having made the decision to
get active and commit to building a bet-
ter Society. An organization that will
continue to offer quality life insurance
and related products; and much more —
an organization that truly enhances the
qualitv of our lives and the lives of oth-
ers in our communities. The kind of
organization that others will look to and
say, “Leťs see how SPJST does it . . .
they always seem to be on top of
things.”
We can do it. In fact, the SPJST’s
been doing great things for our mem-
bers and in our local communities for a
hundred years . . . Oddly enough, iťs
because of that winning track record
that we need to step back and také a
critical look at the way we operáte. In
his book, The Road Ahead, Bili Gates
— who built Microsoft into one of the
most successful companies in the world
— offers sage advice. “Success is a
lousy teacher,” he says. “It seduces
smart people into thinking they can’t
lose. And iťs an unreliable guide to the
future. What seems the perfect business
pian or latest technology today may
soon be as out-of-date as the eight-track
tápe player...”
In the future, smart, experienced and
Creative lodges will prosper. It will také
foresight, planning and acíion.
"Aim high —
then deliver.
Iťs a táli order
and one that can
také us on an
exciting road
into the future."
On a related notě, you've probably
heard on television or read in newspapers
the havoc that the year 2000 is expected
to generate in many organizational Com-
puter data banks. Seems as though the
Systems when they were designed a gen-
eration ago, failed to také the changing
millennium into consideration. As a
result, Computer systems in practically
every industry háve to be modified in
order to ensure that they don’t go haywire
when the decade ends. Recently, the
SPJST, through the office of Financial
Secretary Jerry Mikuláš, has been work-
ing to upgrade its Computer network. As
a result of foresight, planning and action,
the finance and
•mmmtmmmmmmmmmmmmmm aCCOUnting areaS
will be ready when
the time comes.
Just as com-
puters háve served
to make SPJST’s
internal operations
more efřective,
foresight, planning
and action will dra-
matically inerease
the effectiveness of
our Society’s Com-
munications and
marketing efforts.
Every member of
aHHBHaaMMa the Society •—
including our
young people — will háve access to
more information than anyone has today.
"Personál computers háve already
altered work habits, but they haven’t
really changed our lives much yet,” Mr.
Gates says. “When tomorrow’s powerful
information machines are connected . . .
people, machines, entertainment, and
information Services will all be accessi-
ble. You will be able to stay in touch
with anyone, anywhere, who wants to
stay in touch with you ...”
Does all of this connectivity mean
that lodge meetings and activities will
become a thing of the past? Hardly. If
anything, it will probably lead to more
interaction and activities as members uti-
lize the systém to link with members
sharing common interests. From tarok
players seeking to organize a tournament
to finance-minded members seeking to
set up an investment club ... the possi-
bilities are infinite ...
These ideas, understandably, tum off
a lot of people. Sometimes change can
feel a bit threatening; but, as with so
many changes, once we get ušed to it,
we wonder how we did without it. It
wasn’t that long ago that the telephone
was introduced as a major advance in
two-way communication. But even the
telephone, at first, was denounced as
nothing more than a nuisance.
As Mr. Gates observes, “People were
made uncomfortable and awkward by
this mechanical invader in their homes.
Eventually, though, men and women
realized they were not just getting a new
machine, they were leaming a new kind
of communication.”
Aim high —then deliver
Iťs a tall order and one that can také
us on an exciting road into the future.
