THE ALAMO--(Shrine of Texas
Liberty). The present building is the old
chapel of Míssion San Antonio de
Valero, founded in 1718 by the
Franciscan padres. In 1836, durtag the
war for Texas Independence, the Alamo
was the scene of one of the most heroic
events in the history of our nation. A1I of
the 187 defendtag Texas soidiers were
killed here while being beseiged by
Mexičan troops under the Mexičan
General Santa Anna. The now reknown
battle cry, “Remember the Alamo”,
later carried the Texans to victory. Photo

From The Editor
The copy of proposed By-law changes
keeps coming in and we are printing
them as soon as we receive them so
piease read and consider them because
they will be what we will be guided by
for the next four years and any changes
made ift our constitution and by-íaws
are of utmost importance to our SPJST
Society, therefore, the delegates háve a
serious responsibility on their shoulders
and conscience.
This editor remembers the time in the
1920’s and 1930’s when our father,
Joseph Sefcik, Sr., and other SPJST
delegates to our donventions every four
years paid their own travel by car or
train, their own lodging and their own
food to be able to deliberate questions
for the good of our Society. They did not
háve the advantage of deiiberating the
future of a Society, fraternal in nátuře,
with the solvency we now háve! They
met in large assembly halls without
even a thought of air-conditioning or a
public address systém! Oh, yes,
someone will say: “Well, we don’t háve
to go backward and to those days. ” And
that is true; however, 50 years ago when
the “Great Depression” hit, everyone
said it will never happen again and,
now, in 1980 we are faced with
problems of unemployment, recession
and a few bleak years ahead. Now,
everyone is saying that we should háve
been balancing the United States
government budget long ago! Why
were we not?
