SPJST SOFTBALL TEAM REPORT
LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS
Dear Brothers and Sisters:
In preparation for the Dallas ASA
Tournament the week of August 11, 12
and 13, we played a practice game
against Dallas Metros, Monday night,
August 14th. We did manage a win by a
score of 8 to 5 and Danny Yates was our
winniny; pitcher. It was a fun game and
enjoyed by all participants.
Our first game, in the Dallas Metro
ASA Tournament, was Monday night,
August 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Klest
Diamond No. 3 against the Life and
Health Team. We won by a score of 6 to
5 behind the 7-hit pitching of Tommy
Yates. He walked 3 batters, 2 earned
runs and struck out 3 men.
Leading batters were Dan Palm with
a homerun and a single, Kerry Goad
with a double and a single, Don Lennox
with 2 singles, Danny Yates with 2
singíes and a walk, Don Jarma with a
base-on-balls, Jerry Zabojnik with a
double, and Randy Christian with a
single and a base-on-balls.
By winning the game, we had to play
again, immediately following our win,
against the First Presbyterián Team.
The score ýas ;liÉÍ'HféJfefor -4.jnnings
and the bottom dropped out in the 5th
inning and we lost the game by a score
of 10 to 2. Tommy Yates again pitched
the second game because our other
pitcher, Lionel Schulz, was in Nebraska
on vacation. It was a shame, but the
tournament dáte was changed from the
August 4, 5 and 6 dáte to the following
week. Tommy allowed 9 hits, 6 walks
and 2 strikeouts.
Hitters for the game were Don Jarma
with a double and a single, Jeff Burton
with 2 singles, Tommy Yates with 2
singles, Jerry Zabojnik with a sacrifice
and a single and Danny Yates with a
single.
Tuesday night, August 12, we had a
game at 6:30 p.m. at Kiest Diamond No.
3 against the Accountants and we beat
them by a score of 10 to 2 in fíve
innings. Tommy Yates was the winning
pitcher allowing 2 hits, 4 walks and
struck out batters.
Leading hitters were Jerry Zabojnik
with 2 singles and a walk, Don Lennox
with 2 singles, Kerry Goad with a
double, Jeff Burton with a single, AI
(Bino) Vrana with a single and a walk,
Danny Yates with 2 walks, Tommy
Yates with 2 walks, and Bob by Dryden
with a walk.
By winning we had another game at
7:10 p.m. against Custom Home
Builders. We lost this game by a score
of 8 to 1 and were thereby eliminated
from the tournament. We had a tired
pitcher and Tommy Yates started his
fourth game in two nights, and held his
own for 4 innings, the score being 2 to 1,
however, in the next inning, they scored
3 more runs, so we gave him a rest.
Danny Yates pitched the next 2 innings
allowing 3 runs and that was the ‘ole’
ballgame because we did not score
any more runs. Tommy Yates allowed 6
hits, 1 walk and 5 runs. and Danny
Yates hurled the last 2 innings allowing
3 runs, 4 hits and no walks.
Leading hitters were Don Jarma
with a homerun, a single and a walk,
Kerry Goad with a single and AI (Bino)
Vrana with a single.
Considering the fact we had three of
our regular players missing plus one of
our regular pitchers, that wasn’t too bad
of a showing in the ťournamerit: 2 wins
and 2 losses, a 6th plače fmish.
I would háve to say had we had all our
players present, we would háve finished
a lot higher. My thanks to all the players
who were able to make the games, and
especially the 6:30 p.m. game, away
cross town at Kiest Park, it took a great
effort to just get to the games on time.
This our season of playing balí comes
to a close; we had a rewarding as well as
a good season, however, it could háve
been better if all of our players could
háve been at all our games; some had
problems due to working hours and
schedules on out-of-town trips; but,
nevertheless, we gave a good account of
ourselves at most of the games.
We did fmish tied for second plače in
a 12-team City Major Fast Pitch League
and we won a trophy to add to our
collection in our trophy čase. Although
we tied with three other teams, we
should háve been* ťhe only- team in
second plače.
We will háve our annual awards
banquet, possibly the Sunday of
September 7th, however, this dáte is
still not definite and our annual team
fishing trip will be the weekend of
