WHERE DO THE OLD
YEARSGO?
Where do the Old Years go,
When their work is over and doně?
Does somebody tuck them away,
Quite out of the sight of the sun?
Was there ever a Year that waited,
And stayed when its time was o*er,
Till it had to hurry and scamper
When the New Year knocked at the
dooř?

With the beginning of a new year
we wonder what it may háve in store
for us. While looking back for a
moment we reflect upon many
pleasant as well as unpleasant
occasions for the year, and také notě
of the good friends about us.
As a fraternal organization we
must live up to our purpose of giving
protection to our loved ones;
protection to our homes, etc.
Fraternalism is always facing a
challenge and everyone must
practice it more and more. If all of us
would grasp and practice that spirit
of fraternalism we would háve good
wíll and peace on earth. Unless we,
as members of the SPJST, make an
honest effort to practice reál Bene-
volence, Humanity and Brotherhood
to each other we fail to do our duty
as fellow members.

Leťs pause for a second to reflect
on the pleasant relations of the year
just passed, to think of our acquain-
tances. Leťs resolve to show more
kindness, less criticism,* less doubt
and more faith in each other during
the coming year. Fraternalism is the
bond which unites us as citizens of
one country, having only one
purpose in mind. Our common cause
is the protection of our ideals,
homes, schools, our beliefs, etc.
Therefore, let us continue to spread
that fraternal spirit in the new year!
Recently we háve seen numerous
frozen car dooř locks. The best and
fastest way to thaw a frozen car-
door lock is to heat the key, or you
may use a match, candle or cigarette
lighter. It is best to wear gloves to
keep from burning your fingers. In
many cases you may háve to repeat
the heating process several times to
thaw the lock completely.
If you wear contact lenses, do you
from time to time find yourself on
your hands and knees looking for a
lost lens? There may be a better
solution to search for it, try using a
vacuum cleaner. Simply put a nylon
stoeking over the vacmmťs nozzle,
then carefully vacuum the area
where the lens was lost, the lens
should be pulled into the stoeking.
What do you do if you lose your
eíectrical power and there is a lot of
food stored in the freezer? For one
thing, do not open the freezer dooř
until the power is restored because
that will only make things worse. If
it isn’t opened, a full freezer will
keep food frozen for approximately
48 hours. One that is half full will
generally keep food for about 24
hours, if it isn’t disturbed.

Who gets a donation? You can
expect to be solicited almost every-
where — at work, at your front
dooř, by mail or by telephone. If you
are a United States Citizen, you give
approximately two percent of your
pretax income to charitable organi-
zations. But how do you decide who
gets your money? The council of
Better Business Bureaus suggests to
seek the faets. Get the charity’s full
name and address. Ask for a
financial statement and study it.
How much money was collected last
year? How much was spent? For
what? Compare fund-raising and ad-
ministrativě costs with program
expenses. For instance, if a charity’s
purpose is to feed hungry
individuals, how much money goes
toward that aim and how much for
staff salaries and fund-raising?
Other suggestions incltíde: Who
operates the program? Sponsors,
board members, leaders and
operations personnel should be
clearly identified. Are the organiza-
tion’s Services actually needed? Is it
adequately staffed and efficiently
administered? Does the organization
háve tax-exempt status, making
your gift tax-deductible?
If you should háve trouble getting
answers, the IRS can advise you of
an organization’s tax status. In
addition, two agencies publish lists
of charíties that meet their
standards and those that don’t: The
Better Business Bureau’s Philan-
thropic Advisory Service, 1515
Wilson Blvd., Arlington, Va. 22209,
and the National Information
Bureau, lne., 419 Park Avenue
South, New York, N.Y. 10016. The
PAS list costs only $1; the NIB list is

According to IRS, you may deduct
cash contributions of up to 50
percent of your adjusted gross
income. Gifts of property that has
appreciated usually are deductible
up to 30 percent. Taxpayers who do
not itemize their returns will be able
to také a charitable deduction of $25
for the 1983 tax year and $75 for the
1984 tax year. Before, taxpayers had
to itemize to také a charitable
contribution.
Beginning the 1984 calendar year,
taxpayers earning income from
interest or dividends will be mailed
a reminder from the payer of that
income making it clear that such
income is taxable. The reminder will
be mailed separately from the
income payment itself. If the
taxpayer fails to report the income
on his or her federal income-tax
return, the IRS wiil impose a negli-
gence penalty of five percent of the
underpayment, plus interest.

Lately many of us háve seen our
share of ice on nearly everything
around us that may seem to be
unwelcome, and we wish to advise
the ice-skating lovers to be careful
where they skate. Other than a
supervised rink, the best skating
surface is a shallow pond or flooded
fieid. The water shouldn’t be more
than waist deep, and the ice should
be at least four inches thick. Avoid
