State Fraternal Activities Coordinator
readies for 2005 fraternal events
Here’s hoping that everyone had a
safe and happy Christmas holiday. I
also want to wish each and every one
of you a very happy New Year in
2005.
The weekend before Christmas, I
had the opportunity to see Michael
Martin Murphey’s Cowboy Christmas
Concert in Wichita Falls, with some of
my kinfolk from Corpus Christi. This
was quite a hectic weekend of travel
for me because of time constraints,
distance, and what not. Mr. Murphey
and I share a love of music, and we
also share the same initials—MMM!
Fll let you guess what my middle ini-
tial stands for. To be honest, a part of
me was not looking forward to that
concert. However, the show far
exceeded my expectations. After that
concert, I found out that not only do
we share the aforementioned things, I
know that we share so much more—
an appreciation for our faith, a love
and respect for the USA and those
who defend it, a yeaming for the great
outdoors and wide open spaces, and a
longing for the good ol’ days. Few
are the times when an actor, singer,
musician or celebrity doesn’t just pay
lip Service to their beliefs and convic-
tions but repeats their dedication and
commitment to them throughout the
show. This artist is rare and his
integrity reál. I found it quite uplifting
and refreshing. Catch his show some-
time if you get a chance.
FAC Paperwork
With all of the other duties and
projects that the Fraternal Department
undertakes, it is still on my “hotlisť to
overhaul the current systém by which
our lodges track and report fraternal
and community events. As a matter of
fact, we are currently underway and I
believe we are ahead of schedule! As
I stated before, I want to submit the
overhauled forms to your District
FACs for their approval and review
before making them permanent. I
believe with our timetable, we will
accomplish this very soon leaving us
plenty of time for any changes or sug-
gested revisions. Your input is impor-
tant to us so feel free to call and dis-
cuss ideas any time. I ask in advance
for your patience and cooperation dur-
ing this transitional period. It is our
goal to make the new forms simpler,
easier, and more effective for our
FACs. For the purpose of continuity,
we will still be using the current form
booklet for the time being. In the
event that there are still some of you
who are currently compiling data
and/or having some trouble filling out
the current forms, do not to hesitate to
contact us at the Home Office or seek
the sage advice of your District FACs
- thaťs what we are here for.
Annual Mailout (reminder)
The SPJST Home Office provides
assistance to our lodges by providing
an annual free mailout for your lodge.
We all know the cost of postage and
how this could adversely affect your
budget when needing to reach many
people about an important function
that your lodge might be hosting.
Také advantage of this free Service
when iťs most precious to you—
Christmas party notices, lodge pic-
nics, membership banquets, etc. The
SPJST wants to help your lodge so use
this annual Service wisely. For ques-
tions or concems about how to best
utilize this Service, contact Vestnik

Fraternalist of the Year
The deadline to tum in your nomi-
nation for this prestigious award was
December 17, 2004. Thank you to
those of you who háve taken the time
and effort to nominate that speciál
someone. I am sure that it will be a
tough choice for the judges. Best of
luck to all of the nominees!
Open House Celebration
What a great time we had at the
Home Office on Thursday, December
9. Miss Texas Jamie Story, Santa and
Mrs. Claus, carolers, and many of you
were on hand to share in the occasion.
The Home Office had an overflow
crowd, and it was nice to see such a
fine tumout—even with the unseason-
ably warm weather! Orel the Eagle,
our new SPJST mascot, even flew
down from his high canyon perch to
join in the festivities and walk the
parade routě along with our beautiful
float. Incidentally, the SPJST Float
took second plače in this yeaťs parade
after having taken first plače the pre-
vious two years. Congratulations to
Melanie Zavodny, David Nauert,
Gene McBride and others who spend
countless hours readying the float for
display and competitions. Best of
luck on July 4,2005, in Belton, Texas,
where the float will be looking for its
third consecutive first plače finish! If
you are interested in having the float
at your next event or would like to
help with preparing the float for other
events, contact Melanie Zavodny at
the Home Office.
SPJST vs. Hermann Sons
Bowling Tourney
The SPJST will be teaming up with
the Hermann Sons for the first-ever
co-fratemal bowling toumey between
these two legendary organizations. It
will také plače on February 19, 2005,
at Showplace Lanes in Austin, Texas.
The proceeds will benefit the Susan G.
Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
The toumey is open to all SPJST
members 16 years or older. You do
not need to be an experienced bowler
to participate—thaťs why Fm going
to bowl! There is a pre-registration
deadline so don’t delay. Leťs show
those Sons of Hermann that the SPJST
can “bowl ‘em over!”
Galveston Mardi Gras Beach Run
The SPJST has agreed to be a spon-
sor of the Sixth Annual Mardi Gras
Beach Run in Galveston, Texas, on
Saturday, January 29. This is a great
event that has really grown (groan if I
mn) over the last several years, and
participation is expected to top 1,500
mnners and walkers this year! This is
where we need your help. When the
subject of a 10K or 5K race is men-
tioned, one invariably thinks of ways
of how NOT to enter! However, think
of this as a great way to kick off your
healthy new year. Whaťs more, you
can even walk all or part of the course.
Remember that participation is the
key. In addition, the SPJST will háve
a booth or tent at the finish line area to
pass out our SPJST logo bottled water.
At the post-race site, we will also háve
an area to display our sales materiál
and other goodies. What a great rela-
tionship this can be for us—a life
insurance organization encouraging
better and healthier lives for its mem-
bers ! The event is an official event of
the Galveston YMCA and this yeaťs
event will benefit the YMCA and the
UTMB Physical Therapy Class of
2005. As an SPJST member, there are
many ways in which you can partici-
pate. You can be stationed at different
points along the race and pass out
water. You can assist in the post-race
booth by spreading the good word
about SPJST and its benefits. You can
help mn the District Five Youth Club
games where the proceeds will benefit
the youth club’s fund for the upcom-
ing year and beyond. The possibilities
are endless! We just need your input
and participation to make this a suc-
VĚSTNÍK
cess. If you’d like to be a part of this
great event on the sandy beaches of
Galveston, Texas, contact the Home
Office Fraternal Department, logon to
www.mardigrasbeachmn.com, or call
the race hotline (409) 763-6572.

istration deadline is January 8. For

Rabroker at (254) 984-2451; or via

her ASAP to reserve your spot today!
State Tarok Toumey: SPJST Lodge
29, Taylor, Texas, will host our State
Tarok Toumey on Febmary 5. The
pre-registration deadline is January
31. Lodge 29, Taylor has a great facil-
ity and knows how to host a toumey.
Fm really looking forward to these
events!
Taroky is an “old world” game with
many interesting rules and quirks. I
look forward to leaming much more
about it. A message to you experi-
enced players: Také a moment to
teach and share this speciál game with
a loved one, a fellow member, or a
friend. This is a great way to stir up
renewed interest in the game now and
to pass it along to future generations.
SPJST Awards Banquet
Be on the lookout for the registra-
tion forms for the SPJST Awards
Banquet. These will be mailed out to
your lodge by the Supreme Lodge
Presidenťs office very soon. We look
forward to another great banquet and
to rewarding your lodge for the past
yeaťs hard work.
Closing
Please let all of the visitors to your
lodge halí or facility see that the
SPJST has an active, vibrant, fraternal
program in plače, and that we are
always looking for ways to make it
better for our members. For Lodge
FACs, this means prominently dis-
playing or posting flyers and other
promotional materials regarding fra-
temal activities. If you háve other
ideas on how our Communications and
programs could better serve you, con-
tact us. I am looking forward to a
super fraternal year, and I greatly
anticipate the chance to work with
your lodge or district to enhance your
fraternal experience!
Fratemally,
Michael Morris, State FAC
