Sideline Report
ln sports, any time one of the staríing
players is out of the lineup, it raises ques-
tions. The same holds true in the SPJST
whenever one of our officers has to také a
position on the sidelines.
In January, Supreme Lodge Vice
President Bernie Gebala, while undergo-
ing tests for recurring back pains, was
diagnosed with a form of pancreatic can-
cer. As a result, he has been forced over
the past several weeks to commit a good
portion of waking hours to treatment pro-
cedures. In špite of his absence, Brother
Gebala has main-
tained regular contact
with Home Office
personnel through
personál vísits and
telephone calls.
During one of our
conversations last
week, Brother Gebala
expressed his appre-
ciation for the out-
pouring of support
that he has received
from SPJST mem-
bers and weli-wish-
ers.
“Iťs kind of
funny,” he said, “You
never really know how much people care.
Iťs a good feeling knowing that you háve
friends who are wiillng to pitch in and
help share the load.”
“In all honesty,” he continued, “Tm
feeling pretty good and would like to get
back into some kind of ‘business as
usuať routine.”
Uníil this happens, Brother Gebala
will continue to work primarily out of his
own “home office,” addressing those
items of business within the Insurance
Department that require his oversight and
attention. His 1993 annual report on
Insurance Department operations will
appear in next week’s Věstník.
'f-
Iťs a Good Feeling...
In the previous item, Brother Gebala
made a comment relating to “friends,”
and how they contribute to the quality of
life. Having a good friend—someone
you can laugh with and someone you can
confide in—can mean the difference
between a dreary existence and truly
enjoying life. Moreover, friendship is a
feeling that grows with time and a feeling
that has a way of bridging both time and
distance.
Last week my wife and I had the
chance to visit with two wonderful
friends who we hadn’t seen in long time.
They had their new baby with them so I
was quick to pull out the video camera
and also to make plenty of still shots to
mark the occasion. Even though our get-
together was short—about an hour—it
was a fun; moreover, it was great to see
and hear that they were doing well.
After they left our house that night, a
thought occurred to me. Like so many of
the good times that we háve shared in the
past, we will relive the joy of this visit
time and time again—through our pho-
tographs and in our memories.
The Věstník is kind of like that, too.
Through stories and photographs, most
every issue of the páper captures a few
speciál moments in time and shares them
with its readers. To many of our readers,
the Věstník is like an old friend who
comes around once a week with a hand-
ful of new snapshots and always has a
story to telí or something to say. It may
not always be what you want to hear, but
like an old friend, iťs there for you and its
always ready to lend a hand.
To all of our lodge reporters, district
directors and officers, please consider this
to be your standing invitation to let the
Věstník work more effectively for you in
1994. To promote your lodge activities
and to establish more meaningful and
more regular Com-
munications between
all aspects of our
Society.
Here to Serve You
A couple of months
ago, the Presidenťs
Office initiated a
Question and
Answer column that
showed great
premise. Readers
were encouraged to
send in their ques-
tions regarding
SPJST operations. In
turn, the Presidenťs
Office would respond to, or field the
question to the appropriate officer for an
answer. The Věstník would, in turn, print
both the question and the response.
Although the idea has yet to catch on, it
still has dynamic potential. Most people
with questions, I suppose, simply call the
Home Office or their director and talk
directly with whoever can satisfy their
personál inquiries.
But what about questions addressing
the livelihood of our lodge systém? Just
as the cost of doing Society business has
inereased significantly over the last
decade, so has the cost of maintaining an
active lodge program—a cost that is com-
pounded significantly for those lodges
that possess their own facilities.
From a practical standpoint, there are
a number questions that we should be
asking ourselves. For instance:
• What can our lodges do to control
escalating utility costs;
• What can our lodges do to find
relief from inereased property taxes
and entertainment fees;
• What can our lodges do to ensure
that their liability coverage is ade-
quate yet affordable; and
• What can our lodges do to build
volunteerism and avoid “burn out”
among active members...
Answers to some of these and other
questions may be fortheoming at the
Lodge Officers’ Workshop on March 12
at Lodge 47, Seaton. The theme of the
workshop is “Getting Members to Lodge
Meetings.” In so many ways, “getting
members to meetings” ties in with one of
the three basic tenets of our Society—that
of “Brotherhood.” Where there is broth-
erhood there is cooperation; and where
there is cooperation there is the potential
for dynamic results. If you are a lodge
officer and háve not made plans but
would like to attend, please contact the
Presidenťs Office at 1-(8Q0) 72-SPJST at
your earliest convenience.
