Dear Members and Friends,
This year’s State Youth
Achievement Day was held Saturday,
August 4. It was a wonderful day.
Approximately 350 youth competed
for almost 200 trophies and awards in
15 categories. Entries in this yeaťs
State YAD numbered more than
700—the largest count ever.
For the First time since the 1980s,
State YAD was held on one day. And
for the First time ever, the event was
held on a Saturday. The day began !
with registration at 10 a.m. to allow
travelers from around the statě extra
time to drive in. Following opening
ceremonies, youth participated in tal-
ent competition. Then, the day broke
for the youth to participate in the spe-
ciál category contest. For this yeaťs
contest, each participant was given a
brown páper bag that contained an
assortment of 12 pipecleaners and a
display plate. The only instructions !
the participants received were to cre-
ate something from the pipecleaners j
and display it on the plate. All i
designs were certainly unique. They
ranged from rainbows to cowboys to
people to SPJST designs. Several of
the creations will be displayed in the
SPJST Library, Archives and Museum
until next yeaťs State YAD.
In the main halí, SPJST’s own
Melissa Hubenak entertained guests
with her beautiful voice. Melissa
recently released a CD. She is a coun-
try/westem music performer who par-
ticipated in the youth program. She is
a member of Lodge 92, Fort Worth.
The royalty competition followed
the speciál category. Six kings and six
queens vied for the prestigious statě
crowns. After the speech competi-
tions, the royalty judges were intro-
duced: 2001 Miss Austin USA
Mandy Jeťfreys, Kel Gleason from the
CBS Survivor television series and
two-time Emmy award winner Steven
Chudej. Many attendees took pho-
tographs and got autographs of our
celebrity judges.
The awards ceremony concluded
the day. Congratulations to all partic-
ipants. You made it to the statě com-
petition. That is awesome! I am so
proud of you. State YAD is always
an exciting day for our young people.
These youth spend countless hours
preparing for their contests. And all
of the hard work really shows at
statě. All of this yeaťs contests—
crafts, talent, scrapbook, poster and
Dennis Trojacek of Ennis, who is fea-
tured on saxophone, guitar and vocals.
Perennial crowd-pleasers at SPJST
lodge halls around the statě, the
award-winning band celebrated their
45th Anniversary at Seaton Star Halí
with an overflow crowd. The Vrazels’
Polka Band has played for the Grand
Polka Festival at Jackie Gaughan’s
Plaza Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas,
Nevada in 1995, 1996 and 1998 and
now at the 2001 Grand Polka Festival
in Las Vegas on September 9 and 10,
where they will be awarded the 2001
World Of Music Halí of Fame award
at this event, which runs September 9
through September 12.

hosts District Two
fall meeting
September 16
District Two Members,
Mark your calendars for Sunday,
September 16, 2001 at 2 p.m. Iťs Fall
Meeting —Jun day — time!
This yeaťs fall meeting will be
held at Lodge 177, Academy. We’re
really excited about having our fall
meeting there this year. Thanks to
the officers of Lodge 177, Academy
for agreeing to host our meeting and
assist the district with meeting plans.
Here’s a list of activities planned
along with a meeting agenda:
Country Stores
Tickets for the games will be sold
this year at 10 tickets for $1 (no free
tickets will be given). Please bring
two food items per person for the
country Stores. The country Stores
seem to be a reál favorite activity for
both young and old alike and we’re
happy to provide them again this year.
Cakewalk
Please bring one cake (or more if
you like) for our cake walk. Those of
you who attended the fall meeting last
year in Taylor at Lodge 29 should
remember how much fun everyone
had with the cake walk. Youth club
members will assist again this year,
and we may háve two cakewalks if we
háve plenty of cakes.
Christmas Ornaments
Both adults and youth can enter this
contest. (See rules below.) Last fall,
we had several adults enter and boy,
were there some beautiful and “Cre-
ative” ornaments. Remember, that all
first plače youth ornaments will be
hung on the youth Christmas tree at
the SPJST Home Office. We will
award prizes to First, second and third
plače winners in the adult category,
and the same to each age category in
the youth entries.
Silent Auction
Our youth will again provide us
with a very entertaining silent auction.
It seems the adults háve a lot of fun
“trying” to outbid each other! Best of
all, all monies goe to a good cause—
the district youth fund. Thanks to
Patsy for organizing this again this
year.
