Graveyard Preservation Prjmer
“A civilized society values its past, its
history, and it values its natural envi-
ronment as well. Ifwe are that society,
we háve a strong investment in our
early graveyards and must work to
protéct that investment. ”
— Lynette Strangstad
Every so often, you catch a glimpse
of one: A rural cemetery that has been
swallowed by a thicket of weeds,
brambles and
trees. Ironically, it
is herc, in these
smáli, unkempt
and seldom visited
graveyards, that
the rich historical
outline of our
communities is
recorded. Clearly,
much can be
learned about our
forebears by study-
ing these places.
Good mainte-
nance is a basic
preservation pro-
ceduře. Whether
or not your lodge
or youth club
makes it a primary
goal to “adopt”
and preserve a
cemetery, public
awareness of the
situation as it
exists is growing.
In 1994, Savé Our
Texas Cemeteries,
lne. was organized
by statě lawmakers
and others to help
savé all cemeteries in the statě of
Texas from the ravages of time, weath-
er and vandalism. Iťs mission, “ to
promote the preservation of historie
cemeteries and burial grounds through-
out Texas by public education and his-
torie research , , , ” is both noble and
practical.
Making the effort to preserve a time-
wom cemetery has the potential to reap
double rewards. The first is the intend-
ed one. The second is that of gaining
organizational goodwill and potential
allies in the community in protecting
the graveyard. Young people who get
the opportunity to know the old yard
and who háve favorite stones there are
less likely to become teenagers who
vandalize them or who stand silent
while their friends do so ...
Before making
any changes in an
old graveyard, it is
essential to deter-
mine what preser-
vation work is
needed and how it
can best be doně.
Likewise, it will be
necessary to deter-
mine what who has
jurisdiction over
the cemetery. Is it
owned by the
county, church or
on private proper-
ty? Always get
permission and
advise local auth-
orities of the scope
and intention of
your proposed
work.
The Savé Our
Texas Cemeteries
Internet site (http://
members.aoI.com/
savegrave/charter.
html) is a good
starting point for
groups thinking
about pursuing a
preservation project. The site maintains
a listing of frequentíy answered ques-
tions on the subject of cemetery preser-
vation. This listing and additional
cemetery preservation information can
also be obtained by writing or calling
the Editoťs office at 1 (800) 727-7578.

Funding available for SPJST
cemetery restoration projects
In the early years of the SPJST,
several of our lodges founded ceme-
teries for the interment of their mem-
bers and families. To help preserve
these finál resting places, del
egates to the 1988 SPJST
Convention allotted the
sum of $5,000 for ceme-
tery restoration. Again,
in 1996, convention del-
egates meeting allotted
the sum of $3,000 for
cemetery restoration. To
dáte, only $800 of the second
appropriation has been ušed.
Based on Home Office records,
the following lodges established
cemeteries: Lodge 10, Shiner;
Lodge 11, Praha; Lodge 19,
Velehrad; Lodge 21, Engle; Lodge
23, Moravia; Lodge 38, Kovar; and
Lodge 73, Seymour. If you are
aware of other SPJST ceme-
teries not listed, please
contact me and I will
amend this listing.
Likewise, if you
would like more infor-
mation about making
improvements in one of
thes^ SPJST cemeteries,
please contact your district
director. Their names and phone
numbers are listed in the left column
of this page.

Even if your local lodge does not
maintain a lodge building, it is
possible to establish a visible and
meaningful presence in the
community through various
preservation efforts.
