Happy Anniversary
Happy anniversary ío the members of
Lodge Karel Jonas, No. 28, East
Bernard. The lodge observed its lOOth
anniversary on March 22 in conjunction
with the District Six Spring Meeting held
at the American Legion Halí in East
Bernard. It was a good time — and roast
beef dinner with all the trimmings —
delicious! Thanks for the good cheer
and hospitality! We will be running pho-
tos of the event in about two weeks.
year tradition of helping people to care
for their families — and háve extended it
to their communities. And, from a finan-
cial perspective, the SPJST offers its
members a full line of insurance pro-
grams, annuities and related member
benefits, including home, business and
farm and ranch loans.
In light of all these things, there is
indeed great promise for the future of
fraternalism and the SPJST. Once again,
congratulations to the members of Lodge
A hundred years is a long time and 28, East Bernard and best wishes for
Lodge 28 accomplished a lot of things in tomorrow!
its first century. Through my conversa-
tions with Lodge 28 President Joseph D.
Nezval and from various historical arti-
cles, I learned a lot about the colorful
history of the lodge, its members and the
important role Lodge 28 has played in
the local community ...
For instance, in 1914, a dramatic club,
“Kroužek Snaha/’ was formed — the pur-
pose being to produce and perform plays
•in the Czech language. The last play pro-
duced by the group was presented at the
1936 SPJST Convention — which was
also hosted by Lodge 28, East Bernard in

Sherrie Kubala Watkins of Lodge 5, Pilot
Point - Tioga calling to give me a gentle
bit of editorial evaluation. Plain and
simple — and with a lot of good humor
—she wanted to know why I had “paint-
ed her nose white” in the photo which
appeared on page five of the March 18
Riverside Halí on the banks of the San issue of the Vestnik. I knew exactly what

Bernard River. Tents were pitched
adjoining the halí for the delegates’ food
and refreshments . . . And, how’s this for
innovative thinking: The lodge halí was
ušed as the community’s movie theatre in
the 1930s and 40s! Other community
groups also took advantagc of the lodge
halPs large auditorium and stage, relying
on the facility as a playhouse for their
own dramatic perťormances...
Achieving success in the future
remains an exciting prospect for Lodge
28, East Bernard and the SPJST. Just as
our forefathers learned to adjust, the
SPJST is responding to meet the needs of
its members in these changing times.
One of the most significant fraternal
developments in the SPJST over the past
decades has been the inerease in volun-
teerism and human Service projects. In
lodges all over the statě, members are
committing their time and energy to the
support of worthwhile causes and help-
ing people in need. They háve taken the
best that the SPJST has to offer — a 100-
she was talking about so I had to laugh.
But not for long — I really felt bad. The
photo that she was referring to was a
group shot of Lodge 5 officers who
attended the February 28 Lodge
Recognition and Incentive Banquet in
Caldwell. Apparently, what happened
was that somewhere between the time I
composed the pages and the printer got
them on the press, a tiny bit of foreign
matter made its way onto the photo-
graphic plates -— and ended up looking
like a ping-pong balí on Sherrie’s nose.
Respectfully, I apologize for the
defacement and am reprinting the photo
below. Thank you, Sister Sherrie, for
your understanding and your outstanding
efforts — and indeed, congratulations to
all of the members of Lodge 5, Pilot
Point-Tioga on winning the Platinum
Award for 1998! Likewise, hats off to
Lodge 5 for the initiative they exhibited
recently in establishing a new youth
club. Keep up the good work!
