Alíhough interest rates are faíiing,
short - term investments still pay
reasonabiy high rates. And vour funds
are available on short notice.
Among the places where you can
park cash that you may need quickly
and still earn fairly good yields:
Ceriifleates of deposit. Short - term
certificates of deposit, which háve
varying maturit;es, earn interest at
market rates. Six - month CD’s now
pay 10.28 percent on average; one -•
year certificates pay 10.75 percent.
Minimum deposits are required, but
many are as low as $100. CD’s with a
fixed term carry a penalty if you také
out any of the principál before
maturity. But on accounts of a year or
less, the penalty is just a montíťs
interest on the amount withdrawn.
You are always entitled to the interest
earned without penalty.

Money - market mutuai funds. As
financial intermediaries that combine
the funds of many shareholders and
invest the pooled money in a portfolio
of short - term assets, money - market
mutuai funds háve minimum - deposit
requirements ranging from $100 to
$5,000 and pay yields that change
daily. The current average: 9.79
percent. Funds can be withdrawn at
any time. Checks can be written on
your account, although many funds set
a minimum of $250 for each check.
***
Money - market deposit accounts.
You can open an MMDA for a
minimum deposit of $2,500 at a bank
or savings institution. On January 1,
the minimum dropped to $1,000.
These accounts pay market interest
rates - currently 9.48 percent. Rates
can be guaranteed for up to a month.
No more than six preauthorized,
automatic or other third - party
transfers are allowed monthly. Three
of these can be checks, but some
institutions set minimum amounts.
Cash withdrawals are unlimited, but
seven days’ notice may be required.
The Federai Deposit Insurance
Corporation has expanded its
consumer - hot - line Service by adding
a telecommunications device for the
deaf. Those who cannot hear on the
telephone and who háve access to the
proper equipment now can
communicate with the FDIC via
teletype messages. The hot line ailows
the public to ask questions or present
views or complaints about consumer
protection or civil - rights matters in
banking. The toll - free number is (800)
424 - 5488 and is in Service Monday
through Friday from 8:30 to 4:45 p.m.
EST.
Workers will be paying Sociál
Security payroil taxes longer next year
and at a higher rate than in 1984. The
reason? The wage base, the level at
which deductions stop, has been
inereased from $37,800 in 1984 to
$39,600 in 1985, and the tax has gone
from 6.7 percent to 7.05 percent.
