THE FOLLOWING ISSfF IS THLRSDAY.
Your attention is called to the Czech
Chair and Battleship Texas lodge and
individual donation deadline which is
Ocíober 1, 1989 and is rapidly
approaching. Lodges and individuals
still háve a few weeks left to make their
contributions to these two worthy
causes.
We will háve the roster of all donors
to dáte published in next issue of the
Věstník; the list was submitted from
the SL President's office. We hope you
will make an effort toward these
worthy projects for our statě and
country! Both will show the rest of the
worid that Texas “does také care of its
own” desired and needed projects.
The weekend of August 26 - 27 was
an enjoyable event. Saturday, August
26 was the annuai State Royalty and
program at Lodge Hvězda Texasu
(Star Halí) No. 47 at Seaton in the
afternoon, an evening meal and dance
afterwards. The king and queen
contestants all gave good presentations
and sounded like adults. This editor is
relieved that he wasn’t one of the
judges selecting the ones for first
plače.
Congratulations to the winners and
to all who participated; all are winners
for entering in the contest, because it
actually helps build each contestant
confidence in themselves. The dukes
and duchesses sounded grownup and
enjoyable under the capable guiding
hand of MC Tim Reese.
Outgoing State King and Queen,
Daryl Kortis and Marcy Dorotik,
representing Districts II and Ví
crowned and robed the 1989 - 90 State
Royalty — King Brian Becan (Lodge
84, District III) and Stephanie Roye
(Lodge 30, District VI) were
announced winners along with their
Duke Chris Co ker and Duchess
Crystal Roye.
The next day, Sunday, August 27
the Mayborn Convention Center, in
Temple, was the scene for Crafts,
Talent, Beseda, etc. competition and it
was something to see. Surely, SL
President Howard Leshikar, SYD
Claudette Reese, all seven DYCs and
all involved were pleased with the
results of their efforts. Each year the
crafťs department seems to get bigger
and better and it is amazing what the
young members do accomplish. Of
course, the Beseda competition
(composed of Lodges 17, 30, 47 and
84; some with both Junior and Teen
circles) is well accepted each year and
that part of our Czech heritage is very
worthy of our continued support and
attention. When it comes to talent, it is
amazing to see the amount of
imagination and enthusiasm these
youngsters can dream up and perform
same with utmost energy.
We must not for get the kind, time -
consuming and sincere attenton the
judges in all categories give to our
youth. Speaking for our SPJST
Society, this editor can categorically
statě that we all appreciate the time
and efforts of these judges.
Our membership, parents and,
especiaily our youth, are fortunate that
SPJST has a program ouílined which
teaches responsibiiity, respect and
eneourages education, morais and
the enjoymení of life in more saně and
I
safe ways. Our DYCs, youth leaders,
LITs, etc. are due a great share of our
appreciation as well.
President Howard Leshikar made
the top honor ($1,000 SPJST
Scholarship) presentation to Scott
McKenney of District II of Lodge
Lovelady No. 74. He also made
presentations to the top Junior and
Teen of the Year, námely, Rebekah
See of District I - Lodge 9, Snook and
1988 - 89 State Queen Marcy Dorotik
of District IV - Lodge 30, Taiton.
This year there were $500
scholarships given to the districts’
achievers for writing an essay on
“How I will remain active in SPJST
once I ieave the Youth Club.” The
ones winning these awards went to:
Marsha Kovar (Lodge 9, Dist. 1);
Tommy Bowen (Lodge 18, Dist. II);
Stephanie Becan (Lodge 84, Dist. III);
Darlene Migl (Lodge 88, Dist. V) and
Marcy Dorotik (Lodge 30, Dist. VI).
Lodge 84, in District III, captured
most of the Individual Talent, píaced
first also in Junior and Group Talent
as well as in Teen Beseda. It was
encouraging for Taiton Lodge 30 to
bring their Junior Beseda circle for the
first time and plače first in the
competition. Congratulations to all of
you for participating and keeping the
audience entertained. We look
forward to working with most of you
next year, again. Keep up the good
work!
★**
Give yourself the courage to keep on
trying. When is a man a failure? Is he a
failure when his business falls off? Is
he a failure when he determines upon a
goal and fails to make it? Is he a
failure when a month goes by and he
has had no success? Is he a failure
when he is discouraged?
No! Disheartening as these things
are, they do not make him a failure. A
man is a failure when he has quit
trying. And only then.
Booth Tarkington wrote short
stories for five years before a single
story was accepted. If he had stopped
during those distressing years,
Tarkington would háve been a failure.
But so long as he did not stop, so long
as he kept on writing stories and
sending them to publisher, he was not
a failure.
If you could look into the inner life
of almost any successful man, you
would find long months and long years
when nothing that he did seemed to
bring results. You would find him time
and again despairing of achievement,
and yet you would find him working
on doggedly through his despair.
A man is a failure only when he
quits trying.
