Trans-Texas Corridor
Suels member *s concern
á A
Planting time is right around the
corner and as we prepare for this
year’s crops, I wonder what we will
see sprouting instead of the tender
green shoots reaching for the sun in
years to come.
Those of us fortunate enough to
be in agriculture are blessed to be
stewards of the soil we nurture and
tend.
It has often been said that we live
in a throw-away society. Never
before has that statement been more
prophetic. Our current Texas lead-
ership has given no thought to the
long-term consequences of throw-
ing away the most productive land
in the world by signing a 50-year
contract with a privately owned for-
eign company for their monetary
revenue.
Nevermind the fact that we can
produce com and other grains that
can be converted into alternativě
fuel, diminishing our dependence
on foreign fossil fuel. How many
of us really think about the things
we use in our everyday lives and
where they come from? Things
such as adhesives, shoe polish,
starches, baking mixes, sweeteners,
mayonnaise, and yes, fats . . . just
to name a few. That is not to men-
tion the feeds we give our animals.
Questions to Consider
Do I think Spain can fully reim-
burse the heritage our forefathers
left us? Do I think Spain, China, or
any other foreign country will ever
be able to produce what we do? Do
I think that any foreign nation will
send tons of food and supplies to
the United States when we are no
longer able to produce our own? I
think you know my answer.
Trne, not all of the blackland will
be pavěd; however, there are other
factors to consider. How will those
left to produce get their goods to the
markets? What happens to the
smáli communities that enjoy the
quality of mral life? Who pays the
finál cost of transporting all goods
by whatever means?
East Bell County (in Central
Texas) and the adjacent counties
offer a quality of mral life that has
become an endangered species. It
is not just those of us in agriculture
who must protéct this land. It is a
shared responsibility, regardless of
where you live.
Primary elections are in March.
Think carefully of what you want
your future to be. The Trans-Texas
Corridor and its supporters will
change your way of life forever. It
is not just agriculture; it is not just
toll roads; it is every aspect of your
future. This is not a spectator sport.
It is a fact, and the outcome
depends on you.
Sincerely,
Leonard Cobb
