A Young Man’s
Fancy Turns
by RAY DUKE
Spring is just around the corner,
and everyone knows what a young
man’s fancy or interest turns to.
Yes, you guessed it, BASEBALL
• not really, but with the Spring,
baseball becomes the number one
sport in the nation)
Here at Southwestern, with the
baseball season opener about a
month away, the Pirate warriors
of the diamond are beginning to
shed the extra pounds they gained
over the winter and start to get in
shape for the coming season.
Coach Dees expects a very good
team as he has six returning let-
termen off of last year’s third place
finishers of the Big State Confer-
ence. Also he feels he has many
promising freshmen for this years
team which will be a big help to
the Pirate Nine.
The six returning lettermen from
last years varsity are Dwight
Haley, Catcher, and outfielder; Joe
Royce, Pitchr; Dicky Stanley, in-
fielder; John Hensley, infielder;
Stan Mendenhall, Pitcher; and Don
Williams, Centerfielder. Both
Dwight Haley and Don Williams
have hit over 300 every year they
have been on the Pirate Varsity.
Dwight has played two years and
is a junior and Don is a Senior and
is in his fourth year being on the
Pirate varsity nine.
Some freshmen that are highly
touted are Johnny Hollaway, in-
fielder; Griff Vance, infielder and
Don Daly, Pitcher. Some Junior
college, and college transfers that
are expected to be a great helo
are Jerry Knauff, infielder; James
Gese, pitcher; and Harvey Moffett
pitcher.
So far the Pirates have 18 games
scheduled, the schedule includes
the Big State Conference teams
plus Army and Air Force Teams.
S. U. will also play Fort Hood and
Connally Air Force Base.
Coach Dees expects the biggest
competition, to his Pirate nine for
the Big State Conference title,
will be Texas Lutheran College
last year’s champs and St. Mary’s
scond place finishers. All in all
Coach Dees considers the pros-
pects of 1962 Pirate baseball team
to he very good. As he expects his
team to be right in at the top foi
the Big State Conference crown.
Southwestern Meets
St. Edwards Toniaht
by RAY DUKE
Tonight in Austin, Texas, the
cagers of Southwestern take on
St. Edwards University in resum-
ing the Big State Conference play
after the mid-term exams.
The Pirates, beaten by St. Ed-
ward’s earlier this season here at
Georgetown, have a new look and
the determination and desire to win
the last six games left of the 1961-
62 basktball season.
Jerry Knauff the G’5” center from
Rohecster, Indiana has become eli-
gible now to play for the Pirates
and promises to be a big help to
the Pirate attack.
Those of you who can make it
to Austin tonight, be sure and go
and support our Pirates. Let’s
have a crowd in Austin to cheer
them on and let them know we are
behind them all the way.
Next Tuesday night here at the
Southwestern gym, the Pirates take
on Texas Wesleyan College. Texas
Weslyan also defeated S. U. earl-
ier in the season, so lets all attend
the game and help our Pirates gain
revenge by defeating Texas Wes-
leyan.

The minister was giving a talk on
kindness, fo a Sunday School class.
“We must be kind to animals,” he
said. “Do you know I actually heard
of a boy so cruel that he cut off
a cat’s tail. The Bible tells us to
be kind to dumb animals. Can any-
one give me a quotation from the
Bible that tells how wrong it is to
do a thing like that?”
The class thought.
Little Irving raised his hand,
“What God hath joined together,
let no man put assunder.”
