Phis Run Pikes;
Barbs Rip KA's;
Crown Game Set
By TOM VICKERS
In a seesaw battle that saw the
lead change hands a number ot
times, Phi Delta Theta outlasted Pi
Kappa Alpha €0-57 Monday night.
Trailing by 7 points at the half, the
Phi Delts man-for-man press nar-
rowed the gap in die third quarter,
enable the Phi’s to finally go ahead,
and starve off a determined Pike
rally in the closing minutes.
The shooting of Larry Low man and
Phillip Knipp and the drives of John
McMullen highlighted the Pike game
while David Easley and Robert
Chancellor were the big guns for
the Phis.
The Independents, led by David
Price, swept by Kappa Alpha 67-47
in the second game Monday night.
The rebounding of Price, along
with the outside shooting of Ken
McAllister and Bobby Smith, proved
too much for the KA’s as the In-
dependents jumped to an early lead
and easily maintained it.
David Krueger and Tommy Har-
rison were the bright spots in the
KA game while Kirk Kurkendall
Showed promise.
In the only game played Tuesday-
night, Phi Delta Theta defeated Kap-
pa Alpha 69-55. The Phi Delts, who
saw thein ten point half-time lead
shrink to three points, finally pulled
away to preserve a bitterly fought,
hard won victory.
The shooting of Jim Jones and
David Krueger kept the game close
until the fast-breaking Phis pulled
ahead late in the first half.
Robert Chancellor collected over
20 points followed closely by John
Walker who, along with Phil Hughes,
helped control the boards. The su-
perb defense and outside meshing of
Jack Thomas was also a strong fac-
to)*.
This game set the stage for the
meeting between the Phi Delts and
the Independents for the Intramural
Basketball Championship.

placed overwhelming demands on

on record, the basketball season at

The Texas Lutheran College Bull-
dogs picked up steam in the second
half here Wednesday night, and dip-
ped last-place Southwestern, 75-63, in
a Big State Basketball contest.
The Bulldogs owned the lead' for
the majority of the initial period,
but lost it a short time before inter-

midway through the final half.
With Dick Shook leaejing the way,
the Bucs gained their first advan-
tage cf the night, 32-30, with 2:45
left in the initial period. Southwest-
ern maintained a 37-34 edge at half-
time.
And it was not until 11:50 had tick-
ed off the dock in the second) half
that TCL forged ahead again. South-
western hit a scoring drought, and
failed to connect for a period span-
ning over three minutes, thus allow-
ing the Bulldogs to move ahead for
good.
Marty Hoffmann of Texas Luther-
an captured! the scoring honors of
the night with 24. Elwood Herman-
sen with 18 and Dan Schlender with

Shook set the pace for the losers
with 21, while Danny Pollard and
Billy Joe Losak added 13 each.
The victory put the Bulldogs back
at the .500 mark in league competi-
tion, having broken even in eight

This year’s squad, hurt by the dis-
ciplinary suspension of starters :
Jerry Knauff and Jim Vance, as
well as the loss of four other mem-
bers, compiled a very undistinguish-
ed record of 2 wins and Id losses.
The Pirates were unable to
“scratch” in the Big State Confer- .
ence race as they lost all eight con-
ference games. :.
The only bright spot in the entire * ;
season is that all remaining mem-
bers of this years squad will return ;
for next year.
With the game experience gained .
during this season and a little luck, }
the Pirates should emerge a winner •
next year.
This year’s squad was led bjf
junior forward Dick Shook who scor- r
ed 310 points in 18 games for a 17.2
average.
Dave Denny, freshman center
from Peru, Indiana, led the team in
rebounds with 154 while Dick Shook
pulled down 153 in this all impor-
tant category. j n
Good support was also received
from Danny Pollard and Ronnie Ket-
tler as they begin to jell late in the
season.
