Politics And People
Prove Perplexing
By WILTON WOODS
This is student government: con-
fusion and frustration.
Last year I proposed tliart the
Sear it e spend part of its remaining
budget to subscribe to some maga-
zines for the library for the leisure-
tome reading of students and faculty.
Sounds innocent doesn’t it? As a
service to students the Senate would
provide ESQUIRE, McCALLS, HOL-
IDAY, etc.
With no dissents the Senate ap-
proved this plan. The Educational
Affairs Commission drew up a list
in cooperation with Mi's. GeiVasi,
the head librarian. Our Treasurer,
Larry Lowman, submitted the re-
quisition.
This fall I returned and'rushed to
tlie library—only to find that the
cupboard was bare, bare at least
of the magazines the Senate had
ordered. 1 i
The absence of our Treasurer
made it rather difficult at first to
find out what had happened, but I
found Mr. E. C. True, Auditor, and
he explained. The request for the
money haq been denied because the
library has its own budget and the
Senate dioes not need to supplement
that budget.
I pointed out the purpose of the
library was to help students in their
pursuit of learning while the purpose
of the Senate in ordering these maga
zines was to provide recreation read-
ing for students.
In exasperation I asked, if the
Senate could not appropriate its
money as it felt to be in the interest
of the students. If not, did this mean
that tlie Senate had authority only
in theory and not in fact? .
Being rather dissatisfied with the
results of irfy discussion with Mr.
True I later met with Dr. Fleming.
With him 1 tried to stress that the
principle at issue was whether or
not the Senate was to be treated as
a responsible body. We closed agree-
ing that perhaps if the Senate were
to Wring the ipsue irp once more and
give iit full discussion, then a second
requisition might be treated more
favorably.
After explaining these complexities
to the Senate, I moved1 that the Edu-
cational Affairs Commission again
Study the matter. This was unani-
mously approved.
Hopefully, the Educational Affairs
Commission will determine suitdent
interest in this plan and the Senate
will approve it. Maybe this time the
j Senate will get to spend its money,
j Maybe.
Isn’t controvery great?

Dear Editor,
There seem to be, as expressed
in a letter to the editor published
in last week’s Megaphone, some mis-
conceptions concerning the South-
western Lefctermen’s Association and
their financial connection with the
sale of freshmen beanies.
In the first place, we have been
fortunate for the past two years to
have had our “blow’ out” attended
by many members of the school
faculty and doubly fortunate to have
had Dr. Durwood Fleming as the
principal speaker.
In the second place the Letter-
men’s Association does not receive
one penny of the proceeds from the
sale of the beanies, the entire
amount going directly to the school
book store. >
If the author of last week’s con-
demning letter would have taken
the trouble to go to the gymnasium
he would have received a precise
count of the letter-men now attend-
ing this school; also their height,
erages if he so desired-
It is the privilege of members of
the student body, t*> enjoy the free-
dom of the press, but please look
before you leap; condemnation
should only follow careful inquiry..
