Divers Don Brod and Dave Feindberg
^plan to be at Southwestern Wednesday
^Sept. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Room of
the sub to give a slide show and lecture on
the fast growing sport of skindiving. Brod
has been in the diving profession for
twelve years, and has spent a major part
of his time in the sports—diving field.-
Considered one of the leading authorities
on sports-diving in the Texas area, Brod
has three shops in Texas, and is doing a
brisk business. Brod’s shops are located
on Lake Travis, Austin, and Killeen.
These shops serve several thousand divers
a year in the Texas area.
The lecture and slide show will be
concentrated on creating interest among
Southwestern students in diving with
slides taken during diving excursions to
the V.A. Fogg and other places of interest
for people interested in diving. Brod will
be trying to interest students in enrolling
in scuba courses so that they will learn
how to dive safely.
Brod and his organization, Texas
Skindiving Schools, has made a major
effort in the last few years to provide
diving students with an up-to-date
education in the diving field. The course
involves lectures, poolside practice, and
open-water diving once the student has
reached a degree of authority in the lec-
ture and poolside aspects of the course.
Once the diver has reached the
requirements of Senior Diver he will be
able to participate in the trips that Brod
offers. Divers will be able to go to places
like the Bahamas, Mexico, and many
places around Texas the diver would have
a hard time making himself. These trips
are offered at prices even the most
economical diver would find easy to meet.
The exciting underwater world is one of
man’s last frontiers, and you can learn
how to participate in it. If you have any
interest in getting into sports diving attend
the lecture this Wednesday at 7:30 in the
Music Room of the sub and find out what
this fast growing sport is all about.
Gilbreath Works for Rewarding
Dormitory and Union Activities

Because he feels that three-fourths of the
student’s learning experience goes on
outside of the classroom, Truitt Gilbreath,
Resident Director of Herman Brown/ -
Moody-Shearn and Union Director, is
doing all he can to insure that his segment
of campus life is as rewarding as every
other.
In the realm of dorm living, his ap-
proach is firm but- fair. He expects his
residents “to respect student rights He
also hopes to initiate more programming
of activities to be made available to his
residents. These activities would hopefully
include some co-ed functions with the
women’s residence halls.
With respect to Union activities, Mr.
Gilbreath is “more concerned with quality

than quantity.” He hopes to “upgrade” the
Union by bringing in celebrated guest
speakers, changing the recreation area’s
image so that it has a wider appeal, and
making the coffeehouse a more personable
place that would be available nights as an
alternative to sitting in the dorm.
Mr. Gilbreath emphasizes that he is not
undergaking these projects singlehan-
dedly but rather that “the committees are
really the ones that work.” His role is “just
to feed ideas into them.”
His scholastic preparation for this role
includes a B. S. and M. S. in psychology
from East Texas State University; but he
also feels that his other experiences, which
include an electronics background while in
the military service, have “contributed to
rather than hindered” his all-around
education and preparation for his present
work. About the electronics he said he has
found “plenty to tinker with”—enough to
keep him busy, in addition, of course, to his
already hectic schedule.
