He said the problems of working
out the relationships between var-
ious groups, types, and theories
exists all the way from the indi-
vidual on this campus to the insti-
tution known asSouthwesterntothe
state boards which must co-ordin-
ate the state's institutions for the
benefit of all the young people.
Dr. Fleming completed his re-
marks by noting that the final test
of an institution’s relevancy and
justification comes in its product.
The final “thrust and value of an
institution like this,” he said, “is
in the product. No matter how intri-
tricate the complex.. .no matter
how involved the campus ...no
matter how giant the computer...
this (the honoring of distinguished
alumni) is one of the finest hours
of the institution.”
Following Dr. Fleming's com-
ments, Mr. Morse introduced var-
ious individuals ^ho would make
the awards to the recipients. Mrs.
Joe J. Fisher (wife of U. S. Dist.
Judge Joe J. Fisher) presented
the award to Mrs. Grimes. Mrs.
John Foster of Midland presented
the award to Tom Fowler. Dr. Roy
B. Shilling, exec, vice-president
of SU presented the award to
“Brick” Lowry. Former US Am-
bassador to Australia, Ed Clark
presented the award to attorney
David Searls.
Ex-Students Assoc. President
Morse announced that Sen. Tower
would receive his awaid inMarch.
Sen. Tower was unable to attend
because he was in Munich, Ger-
many, attending NATO troop
maneuvers.
During the luncheon, the ACap-
pella Choir performed several
numbers. The Choir was under
the direction of Dean John D.
Richards, of the School of Fine
Arts.
Among the dignitaries present
for the ceremonies were former
recipients of the award: Mrs. Ruth
Morgan Ferguson, formersUDean
of Women (who received the award
in 1965), Mr. R. J. Kidd, former
Univ. Interscholastic League di-
rector, (who received the award
in 1966), Mr. Henry M. Rock-
well .(recipient of the award in
owner and editor of The William-
son County Sun (who received the
award in 1967 also).
Others included various mem-
bers of state government, a num-
ber of distinguished judges and at-
torneys, and a number of adminis-
trators from Sam Houston State
College (where “Brick” Lowry is
Vice President for Academic Af-
fairs).

Mr. John Cardwell, Dir. of Pub-
lic Relations for Southwestern,
again has stated his appreciation
for the assistance of the students
in the ceremonies Friday. He said
he especially appreciates the stu-
dents' willingness to allow the
University Commons tobeusedfor
the noon luncheon. He also noted
the assistance of the various honor
societies during the event.
