Judge Lott
to Speak
Met. Opera’s Milnes
mil wow PAC
on Recent
Death Penalty Case
Judge William Lott, Judge of the
26th Judicial District, will speak
Monday, March 24th on the recent
“Muni/ Murder Trial’’ in room 34 of’
the Cullen Building at 11 AM. The
talk is opt^ to the public.
At 12 o’clock Judge Lott wll lunch
with all interested students and speak
informally about trial work and the
law in general. The place ot the lun-
cheon will be announced later.
Muniz murdered a Southwestern
girl ten years ago, was convicted and
given the death penalty. For the past
several years he haas been on death
row. Aftear an appeals court threw
out his penalty of death, he was
recently tried a second time before
Judge Lott and once more sentenced
to die.
In his Monday talk, Lott will also
speak of the place of the press in
covering criminal cases.
Twenty years ago a promising
young singer made his debut with the
Metropolitan Opera. In the time
since his impressive debut, Sherrill
Milnes has refined his art to become
the world’s foremost operatic
baritone. Milnes will display why
he’s become one of the most famous
singers currently on the Met stage
when his voice fills the Performing
Arts Center Concert Hall at 8 p.m.
on Saturday, April 5.
In all, Milnes has sung more than
70 operatic roles including the pivotal
baritone parts in “I! Trovatore,’’
“La Forza dV Destino,” and
“Otcllo,” as well as the leads in
“Rigoletto,” “Simon Boccanegra,’’
“MacBeth,” and “Nabucco.” His
acting skills and broad, expressive
voice have made him a favorite Don
Giovanni, and the consummate Scar-
pia in “Tosca.”
In Austin, however, Milnes is tak-
ing the recital route. Contrary to
opera, in which grand action can
detract from the total effect of a
singer’s voice, a recital is focused en-
tirely on the voice. And a Milnes
recital is widely known for giving an
audience far more than can be ex-
pected. His PAC concert will feature
numerous sections dating from the
17th century to the present. Strauss,
Mozart, Saint-Saens, Copland and a
host of other noted and more obscure
composers will all receive the flawless
treatment for which Milnes is known.
Accompanying Milnes will be pianist
Jon Spong, a respected vocal coach
and performer who’s accompanied
the baritone since 1964.
Obviously both performers are
seasoned veterans, able to move and
excite an audience with tho^sheer joy
of music. Tickets to Sherill Milnes’
concert go on sale March 17 at all
UTTM TicketCenters and by phone
at 477-6060. Prices are $ 15, $10, and
$5 ($10 and $5 for CEC members and
senior citizens). Call 471-1444 for
more information.
Few would argue that the Met is
the best opera company around.
With Sherrill Milnes coming to town,
Austin is getting the best of the best.
