RECIPIENT OF THE ' BEST TEACHER” AWARD
Dr. F. E. Gaupp
Honored Prof.
“I love it,” said Dr. Frederick
Gaupp, and he has it at home on
the door. What is it? It’s a plaque
honoring him as Southwestern’s
best professor fjr 1961-62.
Teaching American History, En-
glish History, History otf Civiliza
zation, and World History of the
Twentieth Century, Dr. Gaiupp has
been at Southwestern since 1946. In
his many years here, he has lec-
tured not only in the class, room,
but also at special assemblies,
Challenge programs, and Invitiation
to Learning activities. Too, he has
always tried to better student-pro-
fessor relations. At the present time
he is preparing to play one of the
leads in the all faculty production
of CHARLEY’S AUNT.
Born in Freiburg, Germany, Dr.
Gaupp left his homeland in 1935 af-
ter one and a half years under Hit-
ler, ”which was enough,” he add-
ed. After leaving Germany he took

years, then finally movd to Swit-
zerland until 1946 when he came to
the United States and Georgetown.
Dr. Gaupp’s background gives
him excellent understanding of peo-
ple and history. Educated in Ger-
many, he received his PhD from
the University of Bresleau. Many
of his special lectures concern his
background and his travelings a-
broad.
In the voting for best professor,
sponsored by Southwestern’s Stu-
dent Senate, Dr. Gaupp won not
only first—place,—but scond—and
third also.
Presented his recognition plaque
at the Honors Assembly, Dr. Gaupp
reported, “I am 100 per cent inspir-
ed. I only hope that it is not just a
popularity award and that the stu-
dents really mean it.”
Ordained to the ministry of the
Methodist Episcopal Church, South
in 1921, Bishop Martin served pas-
torates in Houston, . Port Arthur,
Dallas, Little Rock, Ark. He has
served as president of the National
Council of Churches in the U.S.A.
and a delegate to the Assembly
of World Council of Churches.

The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity
has volunteered their time and ser-
vice in making and tending a trav-
el board to be placed in the lobby
of the Student Union Building. Peo-
ple will be able to communicate
concerning rides to the different
parts of the state. There will be
room for notices concerning b'th
those taking cars and those need-
ing a ride. Look for this new addi-
tion before Easter vacation.

sented by the SUB committee Fri-
day night April 13 at 7:30.
This is Herman Wouk’s great
story of the sea and of the brave
men who sail the mighty ships.
Nervous tension and complete ex-

take command. The court martial
which follows is one of the most
dramutL trials ever photographed
This picture should be of special
interest to the freshmen since they
studied it earlier in the year in
English.

Miss Lee Henderson of the South-
western University School of Fine
Arts will be presented in a voice
recital in the Alma Thomas Fine
Arts Center at 8:00 p.m. on Friday,
April 6. She is a voice pupil of
Professor Wendell L. Osharn, head
of the university’s voice department
A talented musician, Miss Hen-
drson is majoring in voice and
music education for the Bachelor
of Music degree in the Southwest-
ern University School of Fine Arts,.
She is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Ernest E. Henderson of Twit--
ty and Shamrock.
During the four years that she
has been attending Southwestern,
Miss Henderson has. been a mem-
ber of the A’Cappella Choir, Delta
Delta Delta sorority, and Delta
Omicron, international professional
music fraternity. She is a frequent
soloist in university and commun-
ity programs, having had leading
roles in Menotti’s ‘‘Medium,”
Moore’s ‘‘Devil and Daniel Web-
Challenge Presents
Clifford on Camus
April 25, is the date of the next
Challenge program.
At this time Dr Clifford will give
a lecture on Campus, author of
THE REBEL, THE STRANGER,
and MYTH OF SISYPHUS.
To receive the full benefit of this
lecture it is suggested that those
interested acquaint themselves with
this man and his writings. If these
works are not available through the
library or if they cannot be found
in the dorms, they can be bought
in the University Bookstore.
Those in charge of this Challenge
program feel that it would be well
worth the time spent reading at
least some of the material listed
above before Dr. Clifford delivers
his lecture on the 25t.h.

Miss Henderson has for four
years entered the National Associa-
tion of Teachers of Singing South-
western Regional Auditions held in
Denton, Texas and Norman, Okla-
homa. In 1961 and 1962 she won
awards in the upper college divi-
sion for women vocalists in the
regional competition She has ap-
peared as performer in the demon-
stration of advanced teaching tech-
niques conducted during the nation-
al convention of the association
The public is invited to attend
this concert on Friday.
Scotch Doubles
Spectacular Set

Man on Campus? He has been stay-
ing in the Student Union Building
Lobby. He is noted for his very
distinctive characteristics. You see
his name is Bolo and he is a Bowl-
ing Pin. lie came to Southwestern
especially to announce the Scotch
Doubles to be held Sunday, April'
8 at 2:00 p.m.
What’s that? You say you don’t
know what Scotch Doubles are;
well, this when a boy and a girl
work toward the same score bowl-
ing alternate bails. The winners of
this contest will be awarded a spe-
cial prize. The Games Committee
of the Student Union Buildiflf are
sponsoring this event In order
that they may make more detailed
plans they need to know how tnany
couples are netering. The desired
information should be placed in the
box below and deposited in the
container in the lobby of the SUB.
The cost will be 25 cents a line.
This means that each couple will
have to pay one small quarter to
have lots of fun and entertainment.
Spectators are invited.
