Tin- Southwestern Pirates hnvt

I v i yd it now tile Pirate baseball
team has won one tied one and
iora Each iiane ilie leant,
has brought one aspect lip to its
potential only to have another's
tailing cause them the loss.
Two of the losses went to Trin
its. These were the result of the
San Antonio club’s superior hit-
ting. and inferior defense on the
part of the Pirates.
Last Saturday the Pirates lost
their first conference game to
7 LC, picked as the team in the
conference to heat. The Pirate
defense was for the most part
sound, but the part that wasn’t
fust runs. Hitting has finally
come up to the standard that
was expected before the season.
Tne score w as 9 G. Mike Jones
pitched the entire game, doing a
line job.
Another loss was posted on the
hooks Tuesday, when the Pirates
\ ere somewhat run over by John
TaHeton 14-6. The game* was bet
ter than the score indicated. The
Pirates played well defensively.
Phi Delts Hold
Lead Over KA’s
In Intramurals
The Phis may be on the way
to ending their “always a brides
maid never a bride” drive in
intramural sports. They have
finished second in almost every
sport imaginable this year.
However, as of now the Phis
hold a one game lead over Kap
pa Alpha in the softball race.
The KA's are second due to their
one loss that came at the hands
of the Phis by virtue of a bases-
loaded homerun that gave the
Phis a one run victory.
The game to watch will be
the rematch between these two
teams.
Pi Kappa Alpha is third hav
ing lost to both the KA’s and
Phis. The Independents are four
th and the Sigs hold down last
place.
The difference came with the
long ball. There were six home
iimv hit in the game Three for1
c; eh team, but the Texans hit
theirs with men on each time
vide only once did the Pirates
ino and Lynn Pizzitola hit one.
Today (Fri.) the Pirates face
St Fdwards in Austin. Hopes
arc that all the things that have
lx en coming along will work to
gather for a change and put th
have men aboard. Billy Losak lit I I-'Tates back in the w in column.

Track Team Opens
Season With Trek
To San Marcos
Southwestern’s track team
opens the season Saturday with
entrance of a 5-man squad in the
Southwest Texas Relays at San
Marcos.
The relays are sponsored by
Southwest Texas State College.
Running for the Pirates at San
Marcos will be Kirby Swofford.
Ronnie Croom, Barry McBurn-
ett, David Detweiler, and Jay
Stovall. .
Davis Blanton will also parti
cipate in the meet, but will not
have any points counted because
of ineligibility.
Swofford — who ran last spring
on a national high school mile
relay record - holder — will run
the 880, the 440 relay and the
mile relay. Ronnie Croom, a re-
turning letterman for Southwest
ern, will run in the 100, the 440
relay and the mile relay.
McBurnett will run the 440.
the 440 relay and the mile relay,
while Detweiler will run the 220.
the 440 relay and the mile relay.
Stovall will throw the discus,
the shot and the javelin, while
Blanton will high jump.
The track team last year at
Southwestern took third place in
the' Big State Conference. It is
expected that the squad —
strengthened by the addition of
performers such as Swofford,
Detweiler and Stovall — could
move up to a contending position
for the conference crown.
Strongest events for the cinder-
men include the field events,
where the 6-4, 235 1b. Stoval’
should take wins in discus and
shot, and the relays, where Swof
ford, Croom, McBurnett and Det-
weiler should add points.
Croom and McBurnett are re-
turning lettermen from last
year’s squad.

The Southwestern golf tr
has been having a fine season,
after a rather slow start. Th
team, coached by Medley, is
undefeated in three matches.
The season started on a slow'
note when the team journeyed to
the border Olympic golf tourna
ment in Laredo. They found
going tough here as they played
against the best in the nation
Among the teams playing was
the University of Houston, which,
consistently ranked as the na -
tion’s best.
So far this year in match play,
the Pirates have met and defeat
