Departments seek new faculty members

Megaphone Staff Writer

of the music department, opens
up the application of a graduate
school student who is applying
for one of the position openings

it takes many hours and much

applicants make trivial and

As Tamagawa put it
“Having... positions open in a
department makes it... difficult
to function well, particularly as
regards long-range planning.”
The search often starts of
at a national scale, with around
one hundred applicants, and is
narrowed down to five or six
who get a chance to meet the
students, faculty, and even, at
times, hold a temporary position
here at Southwestern.
The search committee,
though mostly filled by faculty,
is required by the Faculty
handbook to contain one or
two students from within that
department. When it comes
down to it all applications
are sorted, all interviews are
held, and final decisions arc

with the biggest crow d pleasers,
there are some who are simply
more qualified for positions
than others.
When it comes to these
qualifications, every department
looks for something different
in potential candidates; still, as
Communication Studies Chair
Bob Bednar put it, everyone is
looking for people w ho are both
“experienced” in their field
of study as well as “excellent
departmental and community
citizens.”
As Tamagawa said
“Academic searches are a
grueling process and there is
intense competition for each
open position” but when it is
finally said and done, this school
will have four departments that
are even stronger than they are
today.
Students and faculty will
continually have opportunities
to interact with some of the
finalists in these departments,
and give their input. So when
you finally stop receiving
campus wides announcing
another candidate lecture, you'll
know that the long process is
coming to an end, and that our
school will be*better for it.
