On the Line: The New Color Photo Journalism
On The Line: The New
f Color Photojournalism, an
exhibition featuring the work of
12 internationally recognized
photographers whose work
j bridges the gap between "high
art" photography and news
photojournalism, opens at Laguna
Gloria Art Museum on Friday,
June 26 and continues through
August 23, 1987.
These photographers, all in
their thirties and forties, belong to
i a new generation of pho-
tojoumalists working primarily in
color for international news-
papers and magazines. Many
have worked extensively for such
publications as Life, Time, For-
tune, Geo, The New York Times
Magazine, Paris Match, Der
Spiegel, The London Sunday
Times and numerous other
publications.
Each photographer is repre-
sented in On The Line by ten
photographs from a single subject
or essay. These include
compelling, often poignant evo-
cations of American urban ard
rural culture.
The exhibition’s title, On The
Line, expresses the quality that
links the widely divergent subject
matter of the photographers.
Neither strictly documentary nor
unconditionally accepted by the
art world, the vision of these men
and women is "on the line"
\ between narration and
expression, between the "story,"
or meaning, and the "look," or
form, of an image or series of
images.
The photographers
represented in On The Line are
attempting to forge a new
chromatic language equal in
power to that of black-and-white
photography, a language that
balances style with expressive
content. For each, the creative
use of color is a dominant issue in
their work and their technica
mastery of it is by necessity
linked to their visual sensitivity.
