S.U. Enters Conf.
Play Vs. SL Ed s
by DAVID EASLEY
Southwestern Pirates, last year’s
Big State Conference Champions, op-
en the 1964 season in conference
play with a Friday afternoon March
13, engagement with the St. Ed-
wards Hilltoppers.
The University of Dallas journeys
to S. U. for a Saturday game, March
14 at 2:30 p.m., as the “Pirates”
prepare to defend their Big State
Conference Crown.
With five returning lcttermen, in-
cluding All - Conference pitcher Don
Daily, the Pirates should be favor-
ed to win the Big State Crown again
this year.
However, the Pirates must cast a
watchful eye toward Seguin as Tex-
as Lutheran is again fielding an-
other strong team.
Dailey, who compiled a 1.74 ERA
last year should be the center of the
Pirates Conference bid.
Southwestern fans will get a
chance to see Don’s blazing fast ball
in action Friday when he goes again-
st St. Edward’s.
Versatility describes Gerald Hill,
another returning letterman, Gerald,
normally a third baseman, hit 371
in conference play last year and led
the team in RBI’s.
When not playing third base, Ger-
ald compiled a 1 win and 1 less
record on the mound with a 3.00
ERA.
On the other side of the diamond,
Sophomore letterman Bill Williams
holds down first base.
Last year Bill knocked in 10 im-
portant runs even though he hit .200
on the season.
Dave Krueger, the fourth return-
again give the Pirates strength be-
hind he plate.
Dave hit .286 in conference play
and worked well with the pitchers.
Tom Vickers, a utility outfielder
l ist year, has moved into the starts
mg light field job and is expected
to provide a heavy bat.
The Pirates appear to be strong
at second base as Marc Wichman,
a Freshman all-state player from
Lufkin, has moved into a starting
job.
Either Freshman Billy Losak or
Sophomore Kirk Robinson is slated
to start at shortsop.
Another Freshman John McMullen
is leading the pack in centerfield
at he present time.
Mike Jones, Freshman transfer
from San Jacinto Junior Co^’ege,
will start Saturday’s game against
University of Dallas.
When Mike is not hurling, he will
open up in left field in order to
keep his productive bat in the line-
up.
David Blacklock, John Ozmun,
George Warren, and1 Harris Arm-
strong, provide the nucleus of a
Strong bench.
Coach Myron Dees is optimisitic
on improving last years record of
13 wins and 8 losses. He again feels
the “Pirates” can go all the way.
The Russian Revolution began on
March 8, 1917.
