A fter more than seven years as the advis-
/\ er of the NT Daily and a journalism lec-
J. Xturer, Kathie Hinnen is retiring. Over a
35-year career in journalism, Hinnen has taught
thousands of students at three universities and
worked at newspapers around the country. To
commemorate her final semester, and to begin
to show the impact her teaching has had, cur-
rent and former NT Daily staffers wrote what she
has meant to them. We all wish her luck, and
look forward to seeing her as she continues
teaching part-time.
“The first day I walked into class at UNT I had
Professor Hinnen’s intro to media writing class
and as soon as she began talking, I started to
worry that I was a fraud soon to be exposed. Ev-
ery day since, she has tried to convince me that
I’m not, and how to keep it that way forever. Hers
will always be the voice in my head in moments
of doubt.” - William Darnell
“Kathie taught me what it means to be a true
writer and journalist. I couldn’t be more thankful
for her guidance, advice and support.” - Preston
Barta
“Professor Hinnen has played such a huge role
in my time at the Mayborn. She is simultaneously
my harshest critic and strongest supporter. I can’t
thank Kathie enough for helping me become a
better writer and a better person. I wish her the
best.” - Melissa Wylie
“Kathie’s severe honesty is what made her
stand out from the rest of my professors. She is a
spunky, little woman who engages a room with
her immense character. I’m fortunate to have
had her tutelage in these final semesters as an
undergraduate.” - Christina Ulsh
“Kathie Hinnen is the ink-stained, chain-smok-
ing journalist you wanted to be after watching All
the President’s Men. She is a kind woman of un-
relenting fairness, possessing of tireless dedica-
tion to the truth. No one will ever teach me more
about writing.” - James Rambin
“Kathie has the power of giving students the
best unfiltered constructive criticism about their
work. She not only forges real relationships with
students but also gives them the guts to do their
best.” - Nicole Arnold
“Kathie will forever be the wisecracking, sarcas-
tic voice stuck inside my head when writing or
editing a story. Throughout my slumps, triumphs
and mediocre duds, Kathie was the constant
pushing me to improve and I was the punk re-
minding her of that nasty smoking habit. The
Mayborn and Daily will miss you, happy retire-
ment.” - Trent Johnson
“Whenever Kathie walked into the newsroom,
she had an uncanny ability to instill equal parts
fear and excitement in staff. She had high stan-
dards, but it always made you a better writer.”
- Matt Wood
“I came to the Mayborn enthusiastic but clueless.
Kathie scared me a little at first until I realized a
crucial detail: every mean thing she said about
my admittedly subpar stories was said to make
me better. Thanks Kathie. And it did.” - Tim Cato
“I’ve learned so much from Kathie and I love her
style of teaching. She has a unique ability to lay
down everything that needs improvement and
be motivating at the same time.” - John Lugo
