Courthouse
Construction
Gets Contract
Change
Newton County Courthouse
Construction Architect Marcel
Quimby asked for a 90 day
extension to the completion of
the project at last Wednesday’s
commissioners court meeting.
A change in the heating and
cooling system agreement is the
reason for the 3 months exten-
sion.
The extension puts the com-
pletion date at August 2, 2008,
according to Newton County
Judge Truman Dougharty.
In other action at last
Wednesday’s special session
the court accepted an offer from
Rowland Thornton of DeRidder,
Louisiana to donate one acre of
land in the River Bend
Subdivision near Toledo in lieu of
property taxes owed. The prop-
erty is in the Toledo Bend flood
plan and would have been
bought out anyway.
The court agreed to extend
their contract with Texas
Department of Criminal Justice
through. Newton County Public
Facility for the next two years to
house prisoners at Newton
County Corrections center.
No bids were received for a
1987 diesel truck in Precinct 1.
Offers can now be accepted
according to the court.
Newton Joins Forces With
East Texas Crime Stoppers
Jefferson County Crime
Stoppers has now become
EasTex Crime Stoppers do to
the expansion of the program.
Jefferson County law enforce-
ment agencies will now be work-
ing even closer with surrounding
counties to increase crime pre-
vention efforts. EasTex Crime
Stoppers’ executive director,
Danny Mallet says, “By expand-
ing the Crime Stoppers organi-
zation to work on a regional
basis more eyes and ears will be
available to assist law enforce-
ment.”
According to Mallet, “Formal
agreements with Newton,
Jasper and Liberty counties
have been signed and other
counties are working to be
included. Orange, Tyler, Hardin,
Chambers and Polk counties
have all expressed interest in
being included in the regional
effort.”
This will be the third time the
name has changed for this par-
ticular organization. It originally
began in 1981 as Port Arthur
Crime Stoppers. However, it
soon expanded to include the
mid county cities, hence the
name change to Mid-South
Jefferson County Crime
Stoppers. In the year 2000 the
name once again become
Jefferson County Crime
Stoppers to better portray the
program’s involvement with all
areas in the county, outside the
city limits of Beaumont.
What is Crime Stoppers?
Crime Stoppers is a partner-
ship of the community, the
media, and law enforcement
designed to combat crime and
help keep streets safe.
Crime Stoppers programs
take tips to assist investigators
to solve crimes including homi-
cides, sexual assaults, drug traf-
ficking operations and robberies,
etc.
In Texas Crime Stoppers
Volunteer Boards of Directors
are certified by the state; tip
rewards are paid from fees
derived by judges when individu-
als are placed on probation.
Crime Stoppers programs are
operated as not for profit chari-
ties and are managed by a vol-
unteer. board of directors. The
' boards take on the the responsi-
bility of fundraising and pay
rewards to individuals whose
anonymous calls help authorities
solve crimes.
The EasTex Crime Stoppers
TIPS line, which is answered by
a professional crime stoppers
service, is 409-724-TIPS.
