Farm Bureau Urges Farm Aid
The president ofTexas' largest farm
organization is appealing to the Texas
Legislature for assistance as Texas
farm families face the prospect of
another bleak year.
Bob Stallman, president of the
Texas Farm Bureau, wrote a letter to
all Texas Senators this week, urging
support for the Ogden BilL a pack-
age of assistance for Texas agricul-
ture, which is reeling from the af-
fects of drought in two of the last
three years, and continued low com-
mon rices.
1 i.introdnced by Sen. Steve
■ > .(-College Station) provides
• bate of up to 30 percent of
.eed and fertilizer crop inputs
ndividual agricultural produc-
Assistance would be limited to
i lesser of $15,000 or twice the
operty taxes paid on agricultural
alued land.
"The funding of this program could i
be particularly important to produc-
ers in 1999," Stallman wrote, "Fed-
eral assistance, to this point, has
been very short in dollars and slow to
reach the producer:"
In the letter. Stallman also ex-
pressed his appreciation to Governor
George W. Bush, who designated
167 drought stricken Texas counties
as eligible for federal disaster assis-
tance.
"Many parts of Texas have not
recovered from last year’s drought,"
Stallman said, adding that, in many
areas, planting a crop would be fu-
tile, with not enough moisture for the
seeds to sprout.
Stallman said it is still too early to
write off the 1999crop, but lingering
affects of the 1998 drought and low
commodity prices have left agricul-
ture in Texas "in a very desperate
condition."
Stallman, a rice fanner from Co-
lumbus, asked the Senators to sup-
port S.B. 706, the bill introduced by
Ogden.

It is wonderful how God has
made each of us so unique. Of the
billions of people in the world, no
two of us are the same. Our
outward appearance may be
important to us, but God is more
interested in what is in our hearts.
Recently we saw a sign in front
of a church that read, 'What you
love determines who you are.”
These few words are good food for
thought for us to consider what we
love, and what is really important in
our lives. And, although each of us
may have different responses to
these questions, most of the great
people in history were all lovers of
God, country, and their fellow man.
Our valuable possessions, our
businesses, or the various activities
that we are involved in, can be here
today and gone tomorrow. So, what
we dearly love should be something
that lasts forever. God is Love, and
His love is everlasting, and it would
be such a distinction to be known as
someone who dearly loves the Lord.
o
Yon Are?
Whoever does not
love does not
know God,
for God is love.
