THE TULIA (Swisher County) HERALD
PAGE SEVEN A
SAFETY____
lifetime pursuit."
The two major sources of hunting
accidentsare weapons handling tech-
nique and improper target identifica-
tion.
The safe handl i ng of firearms in the
field covers everything from safe car-
rying and handling techniques to tar-
get selection.
"There is a lot of potential for acci-
dents when people are carrying loaded
weapons through terrain that may be
unfamiliar,"Hamm said. "Thecourse
teaches people how to properly take a
fall, cross a fence and other tech-
niques that will prevent accidental
firearm discharge."
"For example, most pheasant hunt-
ing accidents by far are the result of
shooting at a pheasant with another
member of the hunting party in the
line of fire."
These accidents typically involve
relatives and the injuries are usually
serious.
"Last year in my patrol area we had
several of this type accident and they
all involved family members or veiy
closefriends," Hammsaid. "Allofthe
injuries were m the torso and head,
the most dangerous type of gunshot
wounds. There is not only grief, but
anger, too. I have seen both the shoot-
ers and the victims very distraught,
and for many of them i t wil 1 be the last
time they hunt."
Many accidents involve accidental
firearms discharges, and every one of
these accidents is preventable using
proper weapon handling techniques.
"I have never seen an accidental
discharge accident that could not have
been prevented by applying proper
technique," he said. "The best place
to learn safe weapons handling is in a
classroom, where the instruction is
thorough, well planned, and safe."
The course requires 10 hours of
classroom time and will be conducted
from 6 - 9 p.m Friday, March 23, and
from 8 a.m to 6 p.m. on Saturday,
March 24, with a break for lunch
from 12 to 1 p.m. Lunch will be
provided by the game wardens and
prepared by them
Instructors will be licensed instruc-
tors. They will be game wardens Audie
Hamm of Tulia and Mark Collins of
Plainview; and Butch Baker of Plain-
view and Kenneth Sjogren of Provi-
dence, who are both experienced in-
structors and long time hunters.
Those required to take the course to
legally hunt in Texas is everyone
bom on or after Sept. 2,1971. Mini-
mum age is 12-years-old. There is a
$15 fee for materials, and lunch is
free. Therewillbepnzesgivenforthe
three highest grades on the final ex-
amination. The course will be in the
Extension meting room at the court-
house annex on Broadway in Tulia.
"When people are hunting, espe-
cially in a party, everyone is armed
Anyone can have an accident, even
an experienced hunter We are all out
to enjoy ourselves and the challenge
of hunting, but safety has to be the
first concern of everyone," Hamm
said.
