Lady Pirates
Go 2-2 in
Shootout
By Greg Rhea
The Lady Pirates trav-
eled out to Brownsboro last
weekend to participate in the
Great East Texas Shootout
Tournament. The Lady Pirates
first opponent in the tourna-
ment would be Texoma Chris-
tian. The Lady Pirates were
slow getting out of the blocks
in the 1st quarter and would
spend the rest of the game try-
ing to catch up. The Lady Pi-
rates gave it their all in the 4th
quarter but in the end it wasn’t
enough as they fell to Texoma
53-46. Emily Atkins had a
strong game as she led the
Lady Pirates with 19 points
and 9 rebounds. Evelyn Akin-
yemi was the next leading
scorer with 9.
Following the loss the
Lady Pirates would return the
next day and square off with
Parish Episcopal. Parish had
absolutely no answer for
Emily Atkins in this one. At-
kins had one of her best games
of her career in this one as she
scored 34 points, 7 rebounds
and 4 assist. Atkins torched
Episcopal in the paint and
from behind the arc as she
knocked down four 3-pointers.
The Lady Pirates were able to
win the game by the score of
58-50.
Next up for the Lady
Pirates was Grace Community.
The Lady Pirates played great
team basketball against Grace
and they cruised to a 49-26
win. Grace jumped out to an
early lead as they led the Lady
Pirates 11-7 after the 1st quar-
ter.
After that though, it was
all Lady Pirates. Crandall out-
scored Grace Community 42-
15 the rest of the way. Atkins
and Crystal Spain led the Pi-
rates in scoring as they each
scored 10. Akinyemi chipped
in with 9 points and Natalie
Perkins had a nice game as she
scored 7.
With the win the Lady
Pirates advanced into the Con-
solation Championship game
were they would play a tough
Tyler team. The Lady Pirates
would play a strong 1 st half in
this one and only trailed by
one going into halftime. The
2nd half was a different story.
The Lady Pirates got outscored
26-10 in the final two quarters
and feel to Tyler 37-20.
The Lady Pirates will
now prepare to travel to
Winnsboro and play against a
very tough Winnsboro team
this Friday night. Tip off is set
for 7:30pm.

Pirates Place
3rd In Shootout
By Greg Rhea
After a strong showing
the previous week in the Edge-
wood Tournament, the Cran-
dall Pirates were back on the
hardwood the past weekend
participating in the Great East
Texas Shootout Tournament.
The Pirates once again played
good basketball as the team
gets closer and closer to dis-
trict play.
The Pirates opened up
tournament play last Thursday
by defeating Huntington by the
score of 56-46. After a nice 1st
round win, the Pirates returned
on the following day to face
off against Parish Episcopal.
The Pirates played a very
strong game again Episcopal
and were able to cruise to a 53-
24 win. The Pirates played
very strong defense in the win.
With the win over Epis-
copal, the Pirates advanced
into the semi finals were they
would play Bullard. The Pi-
rates would have to step their
game up because they would
be playing Bullard without the
services of their big man, Brett
Russell who was away signing
for a football scholarship.
Things didn’t go well for the
Pirates early on in this one as
they fell into an early hole.
Bullard got off to a fast start
and build a 14 point lead in the
2nd quarter. It looked like the
Pirates might be in trouble but
the team showed just how
much fight they had in them in
this one. The Pirates were able
to start chipping away and they
were able to cut Bullard’s lead
in half by halftime. Bullard led
the Pirates 32-25 at halftime.
The Pirates came out in
the 3rd quarter and continued
to chip away. The Pirates were
able to outscore Bullard 14-12
in the 3rd quarter and trailed
by just five heading into the
final quarter. The Pirates were
able to play their best defense
of the game in the 4th quarter.
Crandall limited Bullard to just
7 points in the quarter as they
were able to pull even with
Bullard at the end of regulation
and send the game into over-
time. The Pirates seemed to
have the momentum headed
into overtime but Bullard was
able to outscore the Pirates in
the extra frame. The Pirates
missed some crucial free
throws and fell to Bullard 59-
56.
Travis Dykman and
Brandon Johnson each played
a terrific game and almost
helped the Pirates pull off the
win. Dykman led all scorers
with 24 points. Dykman also
knocked down two 3-pointers
and dished out 6 assists. John-
son was on fire from down-
town. Johnson scored 16
points while knocking down
four 3-pointers. Dillon Good
chipped in with 8 points while
James Kirbie and Randall Hen-
derson combined for 8. Free
throw shooting doomed the
Pirates though as they shot just
13 of 22 from the charity
stripe. After the tough loss to
Bullard the Pirates now would
go to the 3rd place game to
take on the Caddo Mills Foxes.
The Pirates faced the Foxes the
previous week in the Edge-
wood Tournament and came
away with a nice win. Playing
without Russell once again, the
Pirates were able to play good
team basketball and for the
2nd week in a row come away
with a victory over Caddo
Mills. This game was a back
and forth battle for most of the
game. The Foxes were able to
cling to a one point lead after
the end of the 1st quarter as
they led 10-9. The Pirates
came out and dominated
Caddo in the 2nd quarter how-
ever. Led by Dykman, the Pi-
rates outscored the Foxes 16-6
in the 2nd and led 25-16 going
into halftime.
Caddo Mills would come
out in the 3rd quarter and get
right back in the game. The
Foxes were able to get there
offense on track as they out-
scored the Pirates 15-8 in the
3rd and pull to within just two
points heading into the 4th.
Like they did in the 2nd
quarter, the Pirates were able
to play good defense and pull
away from the Foxes. The Pi-
rates put the game away in the
4th as they held the Foxes to
just five 4th quarter points.
After a stagnant 3rd quarter,
the Pirate offense got rolling
again in the 4th and they de-
feated the Foxes by the score
of 46-36.
Dykman once again led
the Pirates in scoring as he
poured in 17 points. Dykman
was also clutch from the free
throw line as he was 9 out of
10. Hunter Vess scored 10
points and led the Pirates in
rebounding with 6. Brandon
Johnson had another nice game
as he scored 9 points. Reid
Baker was perfect from the
field as he scored 5 points.
Dillon Good and James Kirbie
combined for 5 points, round-
ing out the Pirate scoring.
The Pirates improved
their overall record on the sea-
son to 11-2. Pirate Head Coach
Stan Short is happy with how
his team has looked so far. “I
feel we are in good shape as
we head into the Christmas
break,” said Coach Short. “The
players on this team have
really changed and matured
over the past year. They
showed a lot of character when
they got behind Bullard by 14
points and were able to rally
back.”
