Have You Noticed...
By Michael Waits Sr, Pastor, First Baptist Crandall
Guest Column: The
Preacher
...another Father’s Day got
past again? For all us dads, it
was another year slid by of very
clearly not being a young man
with your eldest children still
thinking you have command of
all knowledge. What happened?
Like the WWII veterans
who survived Iwo Jima stunned
at their continued existence, I see
well balanced adults that I frank-
ly wonder how they survived my
inept parenting. Without com-
ment, I glance at my wife and
think “Oh, that’s how they sur-
vived”. And all of us who don’t
have them anymore, or most of
us I’ll wager, still find ourselves
missing our dads. Miss his laugh
and even his smell. We walk
down this road projecting a men-
tal hologram alongside ourselves
of what our dads did and said
when they hit the age we are now.
You can imagine with a deeper
feeling what they might have
been feeling when they said what
they did, at the time utterly clue-
less what someone in his fifties
could possibly be feeling. How in
the world can you still be learn-
ing from your dad if like me,
your dad has been in a place you
can’t go to for a number of years?
At the risk of being simplistic, it
is because your dad shared him-
self with you. Who he was, what
was important to him; maybe
when one of the kids was hurt
you saw what hurt him and when
his family was happy, what made
him happy. He implanted in you
messages that you couldn’t even
interpret at the time. Those mes-
sages, like messages in a bottle,
have floated around in your un-
seasoned mind until you began
to learn the language of living
your life out. And as time pro-
gresses loaded down with life
experiences to make you less
vulnerable to overreactions, you
can read more and more of the
messages in the bottle. Don’t try
and kick yourself for not getting
messages deciphered sooner than
you do; that’s comparable to get-
ting mad at a baby for not hav-
ing teeth. It’s where they are. The
teeth will come. You’ve still got
many more messages to decipher
as you acquire the ability to in-
terpret.
But how do you return the
favor he showed you when he’s
not around anymore? Well,
share yourself with those who
you pray will live on after you
are gone. Be passionate after
you have deduced what is wor-
thy to be passionate about. Let
them know that deep down they
are okay with you. No one hold-
ing grudges avoids self injury.
Grudges have sharp edges that
cut and make you too sore to pick
up anything else. Lay down the
grudge so you can start healing
and get back to the place you
need to be. These are all great
and mighty goals for a mortal
man. There is One who has prof-
fered Himself to be your Savior,
Redeemer, and Friend; and He
will enable and encourage your
walk as a dad, if you are one. He
holds His nail scarred hand out
to you now. Give the greatest gift
of wisdom to your kids you pos-
sibly can: let them see that you
submit in obedience to the Lord
God on High. You’ll be placing
good messages in their bottles
they’ll decipher further down the
line that will bless them. Come
to Him now and more actively
reflect the Light of the perfect
Father. God will bless you for it.
Seek Him with all your heart...
You’ll be glad you did...

The little Church parking lot
was full of cars. Normally on a
Sunday’s there are several cars in
the parking lot but never before
had anyone ever seen it so full of
cars. Truly must be a special day.
It was indeed a very special
day, a special occasion to say
the least. You see it was Rever-
end Wheeler’s 30th anniversary
today as Pastor of Pine Valley’s
Baptist Church. For 30 years
Pastor Wheeler had been a pil-
lar of the local community, de-
voting all of his time to church
work. He was well known in the
little community and all of the
local’s depended on him not only
as a pastor and man of God, but
they knew that any time they had
a problem, whether spiritual,
physical, financial or otherwise
that he would be the first to of-
fer help.
No one really knew any-
thing about Rev. Wheeler’s life
other than he just showed up one
day 30 years earlier and had built
the little church house. . It was
rumored that he was a widower,
and had been for many years, but
no one seemed to know for sure.
All anyone knew for sure was
that he had been a Pastor and
good friend for those 30 years.
Today’s church service
started just like they had for a
thousand times before. A few
congregational songs, and two
special songs by Sister Smith.
When it was time for Rev. Wheel-
er to began preaching, he stood
at the pulpit and said, ’’Today I
do not have a message for the
congregation, but I have a special
guest, A very special guest that
means more to me than you can
imagine and he is going to bring
today’s message. Please welcome
Pastor Todd”
And then Rev. Wheeler sat
down. A tall thin man looking
to be in his 50’s walked up to the
pulpit and began speaking. “To-
day I do not have a sermon for
the church, but I do have a story,
a true story from long ago to
share with you on your Pastor’s
30th anniversary. You see, many
years ago there was a Pastor and
this pastor had a son. This pas-
tor loved his son like no other.
They were always doing things
together. Now this pastor was a
very good pastor and totally de-
voted to his ministry. But, like I
said he spent all his spare time
doing things with his son. They
enjoyed each other’s company
so much and you could just see
the love that they had for each
other on their faces. They hunted
together, they fished together,
they played ball together and so
on and so forth. One afternoon
when the boy was about 12 years
old on a “fishing” day, the boy
asked his father if little Johnny
could go with them fishing. You
see Johnny was also 12 years old
but he was small for his age and
he was a JR. so every one called
him little Johnny. Now the father
knew little Johnny as their neigh-
bor because many times over the
years he had been to little John-
ny’s house and witnessed to his
parents about God and Jesus.
The parents were always cordial
but they always politely let the
pastor know that they weren’t
interested in the God and Jesus
that he was offering them. The
pastor thought about it for a sec-
ond and finally told his son to go
and invite little Johnny. The Pas-
tor thought that the fishing trip
would offer a good opportunity
to tell little Johnny about Jesus
and the plan of salvation. So little
Johnny came along.
It was late afternoon by the
time they got to the lake. They
unloaded the little flat bottom
boat and climbed in for a fantas-
tic evening of fishing. The fish
were biting like never before,
and they already had a basket
full, just as the father noticed
dark clouds and a storm brewing
on the horizon. He told the boys
to roll in their lines quickly as
he started rowing towards shore.
The storm was a fast mover, as
they normally were in that part
of the country, and the storm was
overtaking the little flat bottom
boat. The waves were crashing
and the little boat was tossed
and turned ever which way. The
father could tell by the look on
their faces that both boys were
terrified, as he impulsively tried
to calm them. The wind and
waves were just too strong and
powerful for the little flat bot-
tom boat and in seconds it was
overturned dumping it’s cargo
(fish and humans) into the rag-
ing lake. The boys were wearing
lifejackets, but the raging waves
and currents were taking them
under. The father could tell that
both boys were in serious trou-
ble and the cold chill or reality
hit him hard and fast. With out
his help the boys couldn’t sur-
vive. They just were not a match
for the crushing and thrashing
waves. Fear gripped the father’s
face as he realized that he didn’t
have time to save both boys. Not
enough time...they were both
being dragged under by the pow-
erful current. As the father saw
little Johnny going under for the
3rd and most likely final time, he
turned toward his son, his own

Derek Lewis, pastor of Love and Grace Community Church in
Balch Springs would like to invite all citizens in the community and
also the surrounding communities, to come to the Block Party on
Saturday July 10, 2010 at 11:00am to 12:30pm, the address is 2704
Cottonwood Dr., Balch Springs, Tx.
Pastor Lewis said, “The Block Party is a great opportunity to
meet the families of the community and the surrounding communi-
ties. This event is going to be part of our CityReach Projects. Our
vision for CityReach is to engage in an eighteen-month prayer cam-
paign, which is the focus of CityReach. Our goal is to accomplish
this vision and pray for the city, the community and the citizens of
Balch Springs but also engage them in fun filled activities. This is
something the adults will enjoy and the children will have a good
time too. We plan to hold these Block Parties at different locations
of parks within our city over an eighteen-month period ever quarter.
They will always be on Saturday the same time to allow parents to
bring the children and stay and enjoy the event. Events and activities
like this will allow our citizens to meet each other and it will be an
