A l ime of Urgency for
Older Adults and Their
Issues
Candidate Filing Deadline for The Texas Silver-Haired
Legislature Nears
“I am so besieged with my
rising health care costs and my
daily cost of living expenses that
at my current age of 76, I need
a part-time job to make ends
meet... we need someone fight-
ing for us at the state level that
represents and understands our
needs and the problems we en-
counter on a daily basis. ” Hatti
H.
The Dallas Area Agency
on Aging announces February
28, 2011 as the candidacy-filing
deadline for the Texas Silver
Haired legislature (TSHL). All
interested persons can receive a
candidacy packet by calling Jes-
sica Walker at 214-954-4218.
The TSHL is made up of
123 legislators from across
Texas that will meet in Austin
for the general sessions. They
develop resolutions that address
the needs of older Texans and
present them to the Texas Leg-
islature to be addressed during
their session on odd-numbered
years. There will be six legisla-
tors elected from Dallas County,
one from each of the four coun-
ty commissioner’s districts and
two at large.
Eligibility requires a candi-
date to be registered voter sixty
years of age or older residing in
Dallas County. The candidate
must live in the district from
which he or she is applying for
candidacy. The two year term
of office is 2001-2013. The elec-
tion will be held on May 24,2011
at locations to be determined at
a later date.
tb - continued from p 1
testing process. Anyone else who has had prolonged exposure to the
infected individual and feels they need testing, can contact DCHHS’
Tuberculosis Division at 214-819-2071 or visit DCHHS’ Tuberculo-
sis clinic on the third floor of the DCHHS building located at 2377
N. Stemmons Freeway.
TB clinic hours for skin testing are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mon-
day through Friday, except Thursdays.
This is the second case of TB in Dallas County. The first case
was reported to DCHHS on January 13 in a student who attended
North Dallas High School.
Pirates - continued from p 3
quarter to take a 41-36 in the 4th.
Led by the trio of Johnson, Otis Smith, and Baker, Crandall ex-
ploded in the 4th quarter to put the game away. The Pirates had one
of their best scoring quarter of the season as they put up 24 points in
the quarter to come away with a 65-49 win.
This was a nice bounce back win for Crandall to keep them in
2nd place in the district. Johnson led the Pirates again in scoring
with 18 points. Otis Smith put up 17 and Baker was solid with 16.
Cooper put in 5 and Brandewie had 4. Jackson White rounded out
the scoring with 3.
Crandall will hope to climb back up to the top of the district
standings as they will have a rematch this Friday night with the Ma-
bank Panthers.
