Get the Dirt on Soil Management at Master

It’s Not Just Roses!” The seminar will be on May 12, 2012 from 8:30
a.m. to Noon at the Grace Fellowship Baptist Church, 7650 FM 1388,

Allsup will discuss “Soil and Soil Ecology,” and you will learn ways
to manage your landscape during drought by using Earth-Kind® prin-
ciples. Choose one of five workshops: square-foot gardening, making
a rain barrel, pocket gardens, container gardening or making a fairy
garden. Also, Smith County MG David Gary, in a wheelchair himself,
will talk about enabling gardening. There will also be a silent auction,
information tables and vendor booths; refreshments are provided. The
cost is $20. Due to space restrictions, attendance is limited. Pre-regis-

Soil is not just dirt. It’s the ever-evolving top layer of decompos-
ing rock, mixed with organic matter. It covers just 10 percent of the
earth’s surface but produces all our crops. Top soil is the most produc-
tive layer and the one we work with when we landscape or garden.
Knowing what kind of soil you have—sand, silt, clay, or loam—and
what nutrients it has are important to successful gardening. The best
way to find out about the nutrients in your soil is to get a soil test done.
You can get bags and instructions for sample collection at the KCMGA
Spring Seminar or from the Kaufman County AgriLife Extension Of-
fice. Learn more about your soil and all the interesting things that go
on in it from Dallas County Master Gardener Tim Allsup’s “Soil and
Soil Ecology.”
