Lady Dragons Hit a Bump in
the Road
Losses to Carter and Kimball knock Seagoville
out of district title contention
By Greg Rhea
Entering play last week, the
Lady Dragons sported a nice 8-3
record in district play and knew
that they had a chance to make a
run at the district crown. After the
week was over however, the Lady
Dragons hopes of a district title
had disappeared and Seagoville is
now just hoping to hang on to a
playoff spot.
The Lady Dragons took to
the court last Thursday night for
a game with Carter. With a win
over Carter, who entered play as
the district leaders, Seagoville
could have pulled to within a
game of the district lead. Thanks
to a dominant 3rd quarter howev-
er, Carter spoiled the Lady Drag-
ons hopes. Carter outscored Sea-
goville 22-7 in the 3rd quarter and
ended up pulling away from the
Lady Dragons to come away with
an 85-56 win. Teyanna Hicks and
Kyiara Allen did all they could
do to try and keep Seagoville in
the game. Hicks led all scorers as
she scored 24 points, while Allen
played a solid game as she always
does as she scored 20 points. The
next highest Lady Dragon scorer
was Kashmere Brown with 4
points.
After the loss to Carter,
the Lady Dragons returned to
the hardwood on Saturday for a
game against the Kimball Lady
Knights. The Lady Dragons were
two games up on Kimball enter-
ing play. In the first meeting, the
Lady Dragons defeated Kimball
49-42 but this time Kimball would
return the favor. After each team
matched each other bucket for
bucket in the 1st quarter, the Lady
Knights would outscore Seagov-
ille 22-14 in the 2nd quarter. The
Lady Dragons would spend the
entire 2nd half trying to catch up
but they could never make enough
head-way. When the final horn
sounded on this one, the Lady
Dragons had fallen to Kimball by
the score of 71-68. Allen led the
way in the loss as she scored 24
points. Clameshia Brown played
an outstanding game in defeat as
well as she scored 17. Hicks was
also in double figures with 12.
With the two losses the Lady
Dragons still remain in 3rd place
with an 8-5 district record. Al-
though their shot at winning dis-
trict is gone, the Lady Dragons
still have a great shot at making
the playoffs.
Dragons Fall to Carter &
Kimball
Tough week for Seagoville as they try to stay
in playoff hunt
By Greg Rhea
The Seagoville Dragons suffered two difficult setbacks last
week as they fell to the Carter Cowboys and the Kimball Knights.
The Dragons began things by taking on Carter last Thursday night
at Forester Field House.
In their first meeting with the Cowboys, Seagoville was able to
dominate Carter from the opening tip and never look back. This time
however it was Carter who was able to get the early upper hand and
then thanks to a strong 2nd half, cruise away with the win. Carter
outscored the Dragons 51-36 in the 2nd half to come away with an
81-67 win. Devonta Abron, who scored 38 points in the previous
meeting with Carter, led Seagoville once again in scoring with 23
points. Justin Reeves added 13 while Chance Houston and Rahsaan
Talley each scored 9.
The Dragons would look to rebound on Saturday but knew they
would have their work cut out for them as they played the top team
in the district, the Kimball Knights. Kimball entered the game un-
defeated in district play. Seagoville was not at all intimidated of the
Knights in this game. The Dragons hung right in there with Kimball
and even led 24-22 after the 1st quarter of play. The 2nd quarter was
a killer for the Dragons though. Seagoville’s offense was not able to
keep up with Kimball as the Knights outscored the Dragons 25-15 in
the quarter and took a 47-39 lead into halftime.
The Dragons would play a very competitive 2nd half of bas-
ketball but they were not able to cut into the Kimball lead. When
the final horn sounded on this game, the Dragons had lost their 2nd
game in a row, falling to Kimball by the score of 87-76. Devaccus
Hinton led the way for the Dragons in this one as he scored 19 points.
The Knights were able to hold Abron to nearly ten points below his
points per game average as he was limited to 16. Talley and Reeves
also scored in double figures for the Dragons with Talley scoring 15
and Reeves putting in 14.
With the two losses the Dragons district record falls to 6-5. They
are still in 4th place in the district and will look to get things back
on track this Friday night as they play the South Oak Cliff Golden
Bears at Ellis Davis Field House. Tip-off for Friday night’s game is
set for 8pm.

Lady Pirates easily handleKaufman and North Forney
By Greg Rhea
So far this year, the Lady Pirates have not really been challenged
at all in district play. Game after game, the Lady Pirates take to the
court and make wins look pretty easy. Last week was no exception as
they began the week last Tuesday by welcoming the Kaufman Lady
Lions to town.
Kaufman, who is fighting with the North Forney Lady Falcons
for the districts 3rd and final playoff spot, were looking to hang close
to the Lady Pirates and avoid that early knockout punch that Cran-
dall has been delivering to all their district foes. The Lady Lions
were not able to do that however. The Lady Pirates once again got
out of the gates early and overwhelmed their opponent. Crandall out-
scored Kaufman 23-8 in the opening quarter. From that point on,
it was all Crandall. The Lady Pirates played some of their best de-
fensive basketball of the season as they held Kaufman under double
figures in scoring in each quarter. When the final horn sounded on
this game, the Crandall Lady Pirates had chalked up a 70-28 win
over Kaufman. Emily Atkins had another superior game as she led
all scorers with 24 points. Kacie Byford continued to shoot the ball
very well from the field as she scored 16 points.
Still perfect and really unchallenged in district play, the Lady
Pirates traveled to Forney last Friday night for a game with the North
Forney Lady Falcons. The last time these two clubs met, the Lady
Pirates won the game by the score of 59-42. The Lady Falcons would
have loved for this game to have been that close. Once again the
well balanced Lady Pirates were just too much. Crandall dominated
every aspect of this game, starting with defense. For the 5th game in
a row, and for the 8th time overall in district play, the Lady Pirates
held their opponent to under 40 points. The Lady Pirates, who are
still ranked #2 in the TABC State Rankings, were able to improve to
11-0 in district play with a 77-35 win over North Forney. Once again
it was Atkins leading the way, this time with 26 points. MaKayla
Hashman had a real nice game as she scored 13 points. Haily Jenkins
scored 9 points and Lauren Shirley added 8. Colby Farr and Nataly
Perkins each scored 5 while Byford and Mallori Newton each put in
4. Emily Kirk rounded out the Lady Pirate scoring with 3.
Pirates Take Down Rival
Kaufman to Remain Perfect
in District Play
Crandall also goes on the road and
gets win over North Forney
The Crandall Pirates contin-
ued their march towards a district
title last week by picking up two
more quality wins. Coach Short
and the Pirates began the week
by welcoming their district ri-
vals, the Kaufman Lions to town
last Tuesday night. The Pirates
were looking to remain perfect
in district play while the Lions
were looking to hang on to the
last playoff spot in the district.
Crandall got out of the gates
very slowly in this game. For the
second week in a row, the Pi-
rates began the game shooting
poorly as they only managed to
score 4 points in the 1st quarter.
Kaufman held a 9-4 lead over
the Pirates heading into the 2nd
quarter. The Pirates began to
find a little more success in the
2nd quarter. Led by Travis Dyk-
man, the Pirates were able to get
much better looks at the basket.
The Pirates outscored Kaufman
11-6 in the quarter and the game
was tied 15-15 heading into half-
time.
Crandall began to put their
stamp on this game in the 3rd
quarter. The Pirate offense con-
tinued to gain steam while their
defense continued to make life
tough for the Kaufman offense.
By the quarters end, the Pirates
had a seven point lead over the
Lions. Thanks to the red hot
shooting of Pirate guard Bran-
don Johnson, Crandall put the
game away in the 4th quarter.
Johnson caught fire from behind
the arc as the Pirates outscored
the Lions 20-11 in the quarter
and cruised to a 51-35 win over
Kaufman.
Dykman led the Pirates in
scoring once again with a game
high 20 points. Johnson was a big
part of this win as he poured in
14 points. James Kirbie and Reid
Baker each scored 6.
Following the win over
Kaufman, the Pirates took to the
road last Friday night to do battle
with the North Forney Falcons.
The Pirates were able to get off
to a good start in the first half
of this one and hold on the rest
of the way. When this game was
all said and done, the Pirates had
come away with a 52-41 win
over North Forney. Johnson had
another great shooting night as
he led the Pirates with 14 points.
Michael Cooper also knocked
down some big shots as he scored
12.
With the two wins the Pi-
rates now improve to 9-0 in dis-
trict play and remain one game
up on the 2nd place Kennedale
Wildcats. With the playoffs just
around the corner, the Pirates
look like they are poised to make
a long playoff run.
