We farmers continue to go
through the motions of farming
even though most are suffering
froma severe case of stickershock
on the price of farm production
inputs. Somewhere there has to
be some sanity, some reason-
ableness in what we are doing.
Surely things are so out of hand
that the denial that we have been
going through is nearing its end.
One has to hash and rehash the
logic in what we are doing, I
rented land to farm so is it logical
to just scratch around a little and
draw what government payments
we can qualify for while taking
the leastpossible nsk? The higher
that energy costs get, the more
reasonable that scenario gets
On the other, hand, if no one is
going to spend a dime more than
they have to on inputs, where is
the food going to come from?

have a monopoly on skyrocket-
ing fuel and fertilizer costs. It is
a worldwide problem: We are
not the only farmer/businessmen
in the world. What we are think-
ing is what everyone is thinking.
Just like with oil, when there
isn’t enough to go around, prices
will skyrocket.
There was a time when our
government saw the need to keep
the American fanner in business
so that we would have a depend-
able supply of safe and nutritious
food. The government had stock-
piles of surplus grain in storage
and even called it the strategic
gram reserve. Today the govem-
menthas completelygotten away
from a government grain reserve.
Farm program payments have
been decoupled fromproduchon.
Most of the payments we draw
are tied to historical allotments
that go with the land. You don’t
have to plant com to get a com
payment or cotton to get a cotton
payment. In my opinion it is
called "keep the farmer in busi-
ness but don’t encourage him to
grow anything." Something is
wrong with that picture, isn’t
there?
The reality of life out at the
farm in Swisher County this week
is much, much higher moisture
discounts at the grain elevator.
With very little competition for
grain elevators and no co-ops
left, they are able to immediately
pass on to the farmer the higher
costs of running grain driers and
handling grain. Wouldn't it be
nice if we could immediatelypass
our costs on, too!
