Blake and Shavla He was a fireman
forfive and a half years at the Wheeler
Fire Department, five years and 10
months as a volunteer fireman, and
two and a halfy ears paid firefighter in

He enjoys being a fireman and be-
ing with a great group of people in the
fire service He fcclsTulia has the best
group of firefighters that we can ask
for and would put these firefighters
up against any serv ice, paid or volun-
teer, anywhere He just likes helping
people out in their time of need
He is a paid firefighter as well as a
volunteer He had been a volunteer
fireman for many years before be-
coming a paid fireman Before be-
coming a paid firefighter, lie did not
nund being a volunteer He was satis-
fied to have the honor to be called a
firefighter
Being a firefighter has changed
him as far as being responsible and
depending on other people to help
him as well as depending on him in
die fire service He could not do this
if he did not hav e the support from Ins
wife and kids
The time for training is a bigone for
him as a paid and volunteer firefighter
and an instructor in the fire service
He is an instructor at Canvon and
Lubbock Fire school as well Tulia
Fire Department Heiscurrcntlv gong
to school to be a Paramedic for the
ambulance service, and in order to
better himself He has found if you
can't learn from other people then it is
time to find another field
Getting ready for a fire is when the
pager goes off. lus mind is going a
huiidrcdmiles an hour thinking what
lO-tfo. how to do it what might be
wrong and how to fix the problem He
just gets mentallv prepared
At the age of 16 a fire chief in
Wheeler asked lum to be on the fire
department, that it would change lus
life and make him a better person in
the long run He laughed at him at
first but if it had not been for the
chief he would not be were he is
todav
The comniunitv stands behind the
fire service and that is what makes
them look so good
Being ,i firefighter people look at
them as a figure in the community
but lie knows they are onlv everyday
people doing a job they tmly enjoy
Some might sav they are cra/\ but
thev get a thrill out of doing it

fireman for 20 years He has attended
480 routine fire drills.
His enjoyment of being a volunteer
fireman is helping out the people of
Swisher County He doesn't nund not
being paid for his efforts
Being a fireman has changed his
life by making him more considerate
of others.
He tries to make time when possible
for the required training tune It takes
a lot to get ready for a fire When his
pager rings, he goes to die fire station
and put on his gear A lot of prepara-
tion depends on the type of fire, for
example grass, house or rescue
When he chose this volunteer occu-
pation it was because of the need for
more volunteer firemen Being able
to help others m time of need is his
reward from this community service
project
Being a fireman has changed the
way others look at him Some people
praise Ins cfTorts while others criti-
cize lus efforts

of service in March. 2002

children. He grew up in Tulia, moved,
and has been back 18 months
Helping those in need of help and
working with the other firemen to get
whatever task done in a timely man-
ner is his enjoyment of being a volun-
teer fireman
He doesn't mind not being paid for
lus efforts because he sees it as a job
that any person would do to help out
others in any situation
He feels being a fireman has
changed his life by not taking things
for granted and to always cherish his
loved ones each and everyday
He attends two meetings a month
and more if needed to get ready for a
fire He attends training m all areas
which includes pumping trucks. Jaws
ofLife, house fires, structure fires and
many other areas
He chose this volunteer occupation
to contribute to the city of Tulia and
citizens of this great community
The reward he has felt from this
community service is when he goes to
a fire or wreck, he can walk away
feeling like he may have saved a life
ora home It is a good feeling to know
he lias the opportunity to help
He feels being a fireman has
changed the way others look at him by
the citizens of the community telling
lum he is doing a good job and to him
that is a good tlung to hear
I'LL SHOW YOU A VOLUNTEER
Show me a person who spends endless hours in training without pay,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person where a cry for help brings split-second dispatch,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who is devasted when lives are lost or maimed,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who is graciously welcomed as a next-door neighbor,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who takes ridicule more than compliments,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person whose car is garaged with the grille facing out,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who sacrifices homelife, TV...even tender moments,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person visibly moved at the strains of our National Anthem,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who may be asked to give more than just dedication,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who is asked to give more...and more...and more,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
