advertising two heads of lettuce
for nine cents; two ears of corn
for five cents; a 14-ouncc bottle
of Catsup for 10 cents; a 20-
pound sack of meal for 49 cents;
and a brick of chili for 19 cents a
pound.
25 YEARS AGO
For the first time in five years,
the Seminole High School band
earned a "I" in marching at the
University Intcrscholaslic League
marching contest in Odessa.
Carol Measles and Connie Baker,
majorettes with the band, also
took "1" ratings in solo twirling
competition.
Over 70 per cent of Gaines
County cotton producers voted in
favor of continuing cotton
marketing quotas through the
1964 crop, a percentage pretty
well characterized around the
South Plains and the state.
Approval means that marketing
penalties will apply to any excess
cotton production on farms next
range of from 60 to 90 per cent of
parity will be available to growers
who comply with their acreage
allotments.
The grand prize in the annual
Seminole Area Chamber of
Commerce Christmas parade was
won by the Beta Sigma Phi
sorority of Seminole, while the
Seminole Noon Lions Club float

Gaines County was added to
the Small Business
Administration’s list of drought
disaster counties in early
December. The county, along
with 75 others, was added
because of crop losses caused by
extreme drought conditions. The
action by the SBA means low-
interest loans will be available to
producers who suffered drought
damage and resulting financial
hardship.
Just 34,0(X) bales of cotton had
been ginned as of early
which hit the county. At the same
time last year, over 124,(X)0 bales
had been ginned.
Gaines County Commissioners
were scheduled to open and
consider bids for a new airport
terminal and shop-maintenance
buildings at the airport at a
meeting in early December.
5 YEARS AGO
Farmers and ranchers located
in disaster-designated counties
and who arc eligible to purchase
lower grade Commodity Credit
Corporation corn to feed their
livestock or poultry can sign up at
their county ASCS office. Local
ASCS director John Hall said that
nine local trucking companies
with agricultural permits have
been noted in regard to helping
those affected farmers in Gaines
County bring the corn to their
farm or ranch.
Good harvesting weather and a
reduced crop pushed the bale
count in Gaines County to just
over 107,(XX) bales. At the same
time last year, well under 100,000
bales had been processed.
Trudi Lewis, a graduate of
Seagraves High School, was
named as executive director for
the Combest Congressional
Committee by candidate Larry
Combest.
Miss Lewis joined the staff
after serving as news director of
KLBK-TV In addition to
graduating from Seagraves High
School, she graduated from Texas
Tech University.

has staked location for the No. 1
Gentry, a wildcat well to be
located 12 miles southeast of
Seminole. With projected total
depth of 9,500 feet, the well is in
a 339-acre lease in Gaines
County’s PSL Survey. The
operator is Arch Petroleum.
