Have You Noticed...
By Michael Waits Sr, Pastor, First Baptist Crandall
how you don’t notice what The sandwiches tasted just right,
you’ve been accustomed to?
When exposed to a stimulus, over
and over, you begin to tune it out.
You don’t even notice the offen-
sive color, or smell, or taste in the
water anymore. Now imagine be-
ing exposed to something that is
wrong but you think it is right,
from the very beginning of your
life.
I recall my early years in the
hills of Arkansas. Nearly 45 years
ago, I was in the habit of having
lunch midway through the work
day at a place called “Bill Tom’s”.
It was a tiny store in the far back
rural area that is found with regu-
larity in that lovely and lush state.
Old men would shuffle in and
out of Bill Tom’s store through
a loosely held screen door and
Bill Tom would dutifully say to
each and every lethargic man
“What’s your hurry” as they’d
traverse the cement threshhold in
slo-mo. Old Bill Tom would take
a break from fixing tractor and
truck tires outside with the old,
heavy tire changing tools if you
let him know you’d like to buy
a sandwich. I spent years eating
those sandwiches after working
up a big appetite in the surround-
ing fields never really thinking
a thing about the customized
black handprints that decorated
the white Wonder bread gleaned
from the tire changing work.
black smudges and fingerprints
notwithstanding. I wonder now
how long it would take me to feel
ill if I noticed food I was eating
had been handled by someone
who didn’t wash their hands. Not
long I expect. But I didn’t know
any different; I didn’t notice the
dirt and the contamination.
Fast forward to the modern
era. The same type of desensitiz-
ing takes place all the time though
in a different context. So many
people these days are raising their
children to see Sunday as just a
day wedged in between Saturday
and Monday. They aren’t teach-
ing their children that Sunday is
a Holy Day, sacred to God. Sun-
day is a day that we should devote
to sharing with our families as
we return to the House that God
built. You can’t get too frustrated
at the kids; after all, someone
taught them to ignore the Lord.
Somebody modeled ignoring the
Lord so much that it became nor-
mal to kids, who will then grow
up to model.. .what? What will
they model?
Maybe you can’t do anything
about yesterday, but you can do
something about today and to-
morrow. If you are thinking you
may not have modeled correctly
in the past, let that go. Go to Jesus
and ask Him to help...you’ll be
glad you did.
