Enclosed are photographs of two
stony meteorites which I have re -
cently had the good fortune to pur-
chase in your reader area.
The 7 lb. 12 oz. meteorite was plow-
ed up by F. Leslie Taylor about six
miles north ol Tulia nearly 20 years
ago. Since finding the meteorite, the
Taylors have been using it as a door-
stop. However, after hearing about
the purchase of several meteorites
In Hale Counly by the American Met-
eorite Laboratory, Taylor decided
that he would forego the luxury of a
meteorite doorstop. He contacted the
Ameri can Meteorite Laboratory
through Henry Snell, an amateur as-
tronomer and meteorite enthusiast
living in Kress. Mr. Taylor received
about $5 per pound for his doorstop.,
The 9 lb. V,? oz. meteorite was
found on t h e John L. Barnhart
farm seven miles south of Tulia near-
ly 15 years ago. But since he was not
sure that it was a meteorite and
since he knew of no one interested
in studying meteorites, Mr. Barn-
hart did not report his find until
after hearing about the purchase of
several meteorites In Hale County
by the American Meiorite Labora -
tory. Mr. Barnhart’s stone brought
him about $5 per pound.
Neither of the above meteorites
comes from a previously reported
fall and each will therefore add an-
other link to our chain of know -
ledge about meteorites. However,
neither meteorite is large enough to
provide material for all of the many
tests which are now being perform-
ed on meteorites. We are therefore
interested in finding other specimens
from both falls. Since meteorites
nearly always reach the earth’s sur-
face in a number of pieces, farmers
in the areas within 5 to 8 miles of a
reported find should be on the alert
for meteorites. Any heavy, dark
stone - shaped pieces of metal arc
likely suspects and should be tested.
The American Meteorite Laboratory
makes t e s t s on suspected met-
eorites free of charge. A sample not
smaller than a walnut detached from
a large specimen at a place where
it will do the least damage (small
specimens should bo sent intact)
should bc^n.l (o the American Met-
eorite Laboratory, P. O. Box 2098,
Denver, Colorado, 80201. Should tests
prove a specimen to be meteoric,
an offer of purchase will be made.
Prices currently run from $3 to $6
per pound depending upon variety,
condition, size, and other considera-
tions.
I hope that you will find the fore-
going of interest to your readers.
Should other meteorites be found in
your area, I will advise you and
work with yoy to keep your readers
current on the news.
Sincerely,
GLENN I. IIUSS

stony meteorite, pictured at top, six miles north of Tulia about
20 years ago. Below, a 9-pound 7 y2 oz. stony meteorite found
on the John L. Barnhart farm seven miles south of Tulia
